Picked up an 82 CR480R today. Bike runs really good! Starts 1st kick when you give it a good go. Idles beautifully. Last time I had an open bike was in the mid 90's and it was a 94 KX500. Not sure if I'll keep it or maybe let it go...Photo

Awesome. I think it's an 83 though.

Nope. Based on the tank and side panel shape and non-safety seat it's an 82. Looks like someone put 83 decals on the swingarm or swapped the whole arm for the newer one.

Looks like the seat was shaved down and a blue cover used.

I stand corrected. No removable subframe either.

Yes, the seat has been shaved down. I don't think that's the original seat cover either.

This may be a winter time project. Any obvious way to tell if it's an 83 swingarm?

Pic is from the GP Classic Steel Series. Says '82 is a 4 speed, '83 is a 5 speed

I always thought bikes look stupid with the seat foam cut
Those bikes were pretty good. It was the year Honda turned things around

From what I remember reading, it would have been hard for Honda to go anywhere but up after the '81 480.

yeah..but the bikes are tall....no problem for me, I'm 6ft with a 32" inseam...bike feels ok to me, but if I were shorter, I could see cutting the foam to get my feet down...

I said the same thing, my 83 480 is a big bike.

I'm not a fork expert though, are those fox forks or just decals?

Cool find.

But I loved that cutting-edge front number plate so much!

Wasn't that, the 450, Honda's first production open bike?

Anyway, great find! It looks mostly unmolested.
I would think that bike would be very competitive for all your off-road vintage racing needs!
Enjoy!

If you don't crash once in a while, you're not going fast enough.
