All,

Im considering purchasing a 1979 CR250 for vintage racing. How is parts availability for such a bike, especially plastics and fork seals, stuff like that?

Thanks,

Some of the oem parts that crossover are still available, a lot specific to the bike are not, including bodywork. There are a fair number of repopped parts, and used and nos parts are available. Not the best or worst bike from the 70’s in this regard.

Check out phil Denton engineering website. I think the Honda's are the easiest bikes to build as long as you have a solid bike to start with. Your imagination and willingness to rob from your retirement fund are the only limits!

If either of the sites below list the part, it is usually available. If they say n/a or discontinued, you can still cal the dealer and they can do an instant search with other dealers in the US. I have gotten several nos parts this way recently.

partzilla.com

tmsparts.com

If you want nos (discontinued original) parts and have a LOT of money, if the site below lists them, they usually have them.

cmsnl.com

I have a 1980 CR250R and you can get just about everything for them. The 78-80 CR250s are a pure labor of love, great looking bikes, lots of potential and a giant vacuum for money. LOL Honda pushed the envelope on power and chassis but forgot to give it good forks, shocks, a strong swingarm and a kickstarter that didn't wear out in 3 days. I've been collecting parts for mine for about 3 years now and should hopefully start assembly sometime in 2019..

There are a lot of threads on here in old school and in bike builds of guys that have built some fantastic Red Rockets with very useful information in them.

Yes, you can spend a small fortune depending on what route you take.

Download the owner's manual and parts manual from the Honda Elsinore website.

Aside from the usual parts search on eBay the site others have posted are great along with a few below.

VMX is the go to source for plastics, they have some other parts as well. Phil Denton Engineering (England) has incredible stuff, Elderfield's (England), and Holy Equip (Japan) have many items too.

Lots of stuff out there. Occasionally someone decides it's time to give it up and sell everything off as one lot. Be ready with money...lots of money!Laughing

There may be enough in spares to build another bike here.

Hey, Gents, thank you very much for all the input and info. Unfortunately, somebody beat me to that bike, so no 1979 CR250 for me. I am an old (and I mean old) Husqvarna guy, so now I am looking at one of those. I'll post the same question about a bike I am looking at.

But I'll keep my eye out for another Red Rocket, Those things are SO cool-looking.

Match this up with Newmann's offer and some unobtainable's from FTE and you'd have quite the dirt cycle. aka bobby myersdork

Gears and stuff, too?
There is a lot of stuff here. Number 29 was clearing it all out while my friend was there loading it all up. Looks like some of the parts may have gotten wet during the hurricane and floods last year but it also looks like his flood water was a hell of a lot cleaner than my flood waters. Laughing

This stuff has a little silt on it while my stuff rusted up in short order. I was a cleaning fool for months...Pinch

Joe, you are going to be a sole source for Red Rocket parts! Might have to hit you up for a few bits.

What's funny is that I have had a lot of this stuff through the years and have passed it all on for little to nothing. At some point when I wasn't looking it all of a sudden got expensive.

I'd really love to find another Fox arm not as dinged as mine is. Not a lot of those nuggets left.

Cool bikes, gentlemen. Well, and cool huge boxes o' parts.............

If I had higher testosterone levels I'd buy the chassis and all the parts and hope I had the whole package and paint every G^%$$#@@#$$%mn thing red and build a rocket. But i am incompetent. Dont know a spark plug form a tooth brush.

I missed a cherry unmolested 1979 250, said to be low hours and excellent condition and the photos looked it. Then I got back interested in a 1982 Husqvarna, re-engined with a WR175 mill, and then suddenly an odd over-enthusiastic phone call I made about vintage bikes came back to haunt me because a guy in my town calls me out of the blue, he restores vintage and post-vintage bikes and he's got two early 80's Honda MX bikes for sale, one of them an air-cooled 480. Sonofabitch. This might wind up costing me some money.....
