Nice work. I raced a 81 yz250 and wanted a matching 81yz60 pit bike.

Vintage minis are bitchin. I have a couple 71 jt60 mini enduros, 71 sl70, 82 xl80, 78 xr75, a long travel xr75,. Went a little crazy on ebay about 10 years ago buying parts like a junkie.

My YZ60 is completely original, never restored. The decal on the lower swing arm has been partially torn off and the 60 decal on the other side is missing. I will replace those and call it good.

I will get some pics of my brothers bikes, mini enduro, MX80 and GT80's.

Nice bikes, very curious though... Is that a TZ behind the pair of 80's?

Great bikes guys!! I restored a 1974 Honda MR-50 a few years back to bring back memories of my first ever dirt bike. It now sits in my office along my trophy wall.

All great bikes! I had an MR 50 for years, planning to restore it, but never could find the time or money to do it. Sold it a few years back for 300 bucks. Was in pretty decent shape, not running due to minor ignition issues.

As far as the TZ, do you ride/race it? That would be a very fun bike for track days! I love the old GP bikes!

Not an MX bike, but this was my first motorcycle when I was a kid. A 1974 Yamaha GT-80A Mini Enduro. I found this 'like new" original from a local old man that had it sitting in his garage, it had only 400 miles on it.

I love it when these threads come up... i love the old mini bikes. The TM75 was the first bike i loved after i saw a brochure.. but i raced a YZ80E and F. However, i always had a soft spot for the early RM's.
Heres a few pics of my collection. The B is nearly all original except the front number plate. Original tires, grips, piston, chain etc.. runs and sounds fantastic.
The N is my boys VMX bike. Lots of aftermarket stuff and not all original but still a nice looking old girl... You don't see this much anymore... only 1 year separates the B and N but they were very different bikes.

My 1979 YZ80 F
The restored , or resto racer mini's are the coolest bikes on here
I replaced most of the steel hardware, with billet parts, still fabbing
items, more in the works for this bike

In 1974-75, if you had one of these, you were the baddest ombre' on the block.

I've been slowly restoring my second bike I ever had as a kid in '69. Indian Boy Racer 50cc. Got it new for Christmas that year. Last time I rode it was '71, when family issues separated myself and the bike. In '83, went to Bakersfield to settle my Dad's estate. Found my '68 Mini Trail Honda in his garage, buried under a mountain of garbage.

A family friend stopped by, offered condolences, saw the Mini Trail and said he had something I might want. Went to his storage unit, and he rolled out my Indian, or what was left of it. My dad had lent it to him for his kids.

This has been a bit challenging, as there is no parts network at all for this bike. Lots of hand made ,replica parts , such as the seat, fender, number plates were made by a good friend.

Engine rebuild parts sourced from Germany. Not 100% original, but as close as it's going to get.

It has taken a while to get to this point.

This is how I received it back in '83. Rough, but still ran.

New plates and fender ,made from molds of the originals. Jeff L put in a lot of time making things that were missing or damaged on my bike. These are his handy work.

Jeff made the seat mold as well ,from a mold of his original.

Another good friend here locally, did the upholstery work. Tom J is awesome.

Wheels cleaned and relaced. Could not find the original type Pirelli tires, so these are going to have to do.

Steering stop replaced. Jeff cut this from a template of the original stop. Also cut some new front engine mounts that were missing.

Jeff also made this engine guard that was gone from patterns of his original.

Getting close now. It has taken quite some time to get to this point, as the hand fabbed parts took some time. Heck, it took my painter four months to get the tank , fender ,and plates done. Just need to find a bit of time to button it up, and see if it will make some noise.

That's a labor of love there Project Racer. Well done and bike looks great. In fact, all the old dudes here have put a lot of effort into their mini's. I would love to of raced Rob Bouchers YZ80F back in the day... that bike looks the goods.

That is cool you found your bike after all this time, great job on the resto!
The 74 GT 80A red metal flake above was my first Yamaha - it was great!
i remember riding at night in remote northern mn

The RM's above are very cool, The B and C models are the coolest looking RM 80's ever made!
In 78 the fastest AMA dist 23 riders here had full blown PDI racers with Z arms, PDI heads and pipes!

I have been looking for a 1978 RM80C for over 10 years in the midwest here, but no luck!
my friends Mike P, and Tim P each bought brand new ones the same day, They were the meanest
sounding mini's

The 78-79 YZ 80's had the most sales here in mn, the tracks, trails were full of YZ's even in northern MN
they have a cool sound, and you could tell what was coming down the trail before you seen it!

My older brother has a pretty clean and mostly original 76 YZ80C model. I straightened it up a bit years ago, did not need much though. Found NOS bars, rear fender, and seat cover for it. Got it right, as the previous owner ran it on straight gas, for a minute....or so.

Paid the estimate fee that our local shop had invested in it for it. Rebuilt the engine. Original paint was still nice.

He also has an original 1971 Kawasaki G31M 100cc Centurion. Not mint, but complete and pretty straight.

He had five of them during the 70-71 season. A disagreement with Dad parked them. After my brother moved out, the old man got sick of all of the race bikes sitting around, and sent all five of those G31M's to the local scrap yard, just to spite my brother.

Would post pics of his stuff, but no longer on terms, so it's all just talk.

Here is a few from his day in action. He made #23 blue plate expert in D-35 for '71, TT and flat track, mainly as a 100cc rider.

1970 G31M Sprockets Park , Bakersfield, Ca.

1971 G31M, Sprockets Park. #23. He was just about too big for the 100cc bikes. Grenaded many a G31M engine towards the end, too heavy, both his size and throttle hand. The blue plate #1 is Bill Johnson. That bike is in Dan Routt's flat track museum in Clovis.

1972 Porterville ,Ca. 200cc expert class, #36d, Kawasaki F-7 175cc. Only thing that gave it trouble was the 200cc Bultaco's.

I did an XR 75 a while back, we used it as pit bike for a couple of years, iv had 3 or 4 75s over the years but only restored 1, the others we just rode a little and then sold them on, I would like another to keep one day.
Would also like to do an 89 KX 100 as I did my first ever race on one.... But I have a mate who has an 89 KX 100 chassis modded to take a 125 Honda 4-stroke in pieces in his loft, that might tick both boxes but he won't sell it..... Yet.
I also did a resto/mod on an ATC 70 a few years ago, pit bike motor, BMX bars, custom pipe, all black, frame tank etc with the red front fender and back plastic.... Looks awesome but never gets ridden now, just starts conversations in my workshop, it's amazing how many people's lives have crossed paths with a little 3 wheeler at some point, il get a photo of it later.

Here are a couple of my mini's. Fun stuff. I seem to crash harder and more often on a 50 than a 250... SMH.

QA 50 set up for mini Sumo.

82 YZ60 with a bunch of 80 parts.

The only one I "restored" and now can't ride Sad

Wow, I love this thread! So many memories. Growing up, I had a 77 XR75. One of my friends had an RM80B, and another had a 79 YZ80. We swapped bikes all the time and in my opinion, the YZ was the fastest one. Probably because it was the newest one. I could not keep up,with either of them on my XR75, but we sure had a lot of fun. We're still friends to,this day.
