My inner thighs are not a fan off coffin tanks, so when I built my Maico, I stayed with the Magnum tank on my 1978.

The Maico Meister/The Silver Fox. Adolf Weil was a 14-time German National Champion and finished second in the 250 World Championship in 1973 (and third in the 500 Championship three times.) Adolf is remember by most Americans for his dominating performance in the 1973 Trans-AMA series.

Everybody secretly has a thing for Maico. I have to thank Magoo for my love of Maico's. I'd love to have a Maico in a couple of years

If I raced a Maico id want a 78
Is that a 1978 engine? I don't remeber the magnum Maicos cylinder to have that shape.

Yeah 78s were the best in my mind. 1979 was the same I think. They just added a rear frame loop for the fender. That's a 250 and they had a more rounded cylinder with shorter fins . Some used to trim the fins on the open Macios cylinders. They would angle the rear of the fins, but it was a bucks up move. That was only for pros and those dudes that seem to have every trick part on their bike.

Here's my 78. It was a 400cc. But Jan at Euro Cycles discovered he could bore them out to the last bore and use a 420 Suzuki piston. The Suzuki piston was lighter and cheaper ($75 versus $14). It let the 400s rev out a little more and gave a some snap out of the turns. Jan actually helped develop the Works Performance shocks which worked awesome. Jan also put air valves in the fork caps and took out the springs. They worked so good like that.

Sorry for not jumping back in sooner, I was caught up in the crazy Red Rocket kickstarter thread.

My bike is a 1978 Frankenbike. These bikes start off with either a 1978 or 79 Magnum frame. With the 1978 frame, it needs gussets on the back portion to strengthen up the frame, the 1979 with the rear loop keeps all straight and moving forward. I installed 43mm forks shortened to 11 inches of travel. Moving backwards, you will find a 1981 250 MAICO reed engine with a PVL, Mikuni, Boysen reeds and aftermarket exhaust. The frame got a silver gray powder coating and wide pegs and billet brake pedal. The 1981 aluminum Thor arm is a repo and I am using Works shocks to start with. New White plastic and I have a Frakenbike.

The whole idea is that the Magnums were the best handling Maico (I always thought the 1977 was better) and that with simple upgrades to suspension and engine, you will have the best EVO class bike on the track.

The unfortunate thing is that I still have not been able to ride this bike due to a back injury after completing her four years back. Soon I hope. Perhaps even this fall if no more set backs.

Getting ready to restore my 76 aw 250 I raced at the Women's Nationals in the day. Does anyone have the correct color match for the silver or red? Preferably the silver. Thanks. Ready to send to powder coat.

Deb,

All I can tell you is that the Red is VW mars Red for 1976/77

Try calling Herb at Maico Only 909 947 1121 for the Silver.

1978 440. 98% original. Fisk plastic, original grips and the rear tire is original. I replaced fuel petcock, repacked silencer, new sparkplug and lastly the countershaft sprocket cover. I don’t ride it. Way too nice to ride.

Great looking Maico s above so I had to share.

No such thing. There is not a motorcycle built that is too nice to ride. Thats ridiculous sounding to me as a chick too hot to poke. Ride it and let the next guy worry about restoring it. It is a good looking Maico

Not riding it takes way more self control then throwing gas in it and firing it.

Owning it and knowing it’s right there is enough. The full restore on 95 CR will get the saddle time. The Maico sits until I sell it. Until then I’ll just keep riding my Husky.

Everyone should ride a Maico before they die. the first time I rode one , I thought I had been wasting time with all the other bikes owned ,

I remember the first time I raced my '75-1/2 MC250 back in the day. It was at a track in Wilmington, PA (can't remember the name)

I was behind a guy on a KX250. We were going down a gentle downhill into a right-hander, and I actually said to myself "I'm on a Maico, I can turn inside this guy no problem"

Going in, he went wide and I stuffed it inside him and roosted away and thought 'man that was too easy!'

Nice! My first race on my 71 250 square barrel was my first race. I came off a 125 Hodaka?. I was so much faster on the Maico even all my buddies said, "wow!". But the race was another story. I got off the line good and pulled up to the first turn in 4th. I slipped under 2 guys into second. About that time the rider in first clipped my front wheel and down l went. It messed up my throttle cable so I pulled into the pits. One of my buddies said, "dude you have knobby tracks on your back". Hmmm my back is a little sore. I finished the secnd moto but the sand track (Marysville, Ca.) kicked my butt. Still the best bikes I ever rode. The Maicos had all the goods to win races, Pauliemon just lacked the skills.
