My inner thighs are not a fan off coffin tanks, so when I built my Maico, I stayed with the Magnum tank on my 1978.

Here's my first. 1971 250 square barrel, Carl Crane pipe and port job. 4 speed!
It went bawww bawww.bawww bawwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
If I raced a Maico id want a 78
Is that a 1978 engine? I don't remeber the magnum Maicos cylinder to have that shape.
What a nice looking bike.
My bike is a 1978 Frankenbike. These bikes start off with either a 1978 or 79 Magnum frame. With the 1978 frame, it needs gussets on the back portion to strengthen up the frame, the 1979 with the rear loop keeps all straight and moving forward. I installed 43mm forks shortened to 11 inches of travel. Moving backwards, you will find a 1981 250 MAICO reed engine with a PVL, Mikuni, Boysen reeds and aftermarket exhaust. The frame got a silver gray powder coating and wide pegs and billet brake pedal. The 1981 aluminum Thor arm is a repo and I am using Works shocks to start with. New White plastic and I have a Frakenbike.
The whole idea is that the Magnums were the best handling Maico (I always thought the 1977 was better) and that with simple upgrades to suspension and engine, you will have the best EVO class bike on the track.
The unfortunate thing is that I still have not been able to ride this bike due to a back injury after completing her four years back. Soon I hope. Perhaps even this fall if no more set backs.

All I can tell you is that the Red is VW mars Red for 1976/77

1978 440. 98% original. Fisk plastic, original grips and the rear tire is original. I replaced fuel petcock, repacked silencer, new sparkplug and lastly the countershaft sprocket cover. I don’t ride it. Way too nice to ride.
Great looking Maico s above so I had to share.
Owning it and knowing it’s right there is enough. The full restore on 95 CR will get the saddle time. The Maico sits until I sell it. Until then I’ll just keep riding my Husky.
My 1981 250 and 400
I was behind a guy on a KX250. We were going down a gentle downhill into a right-hander, and I actually said to myself "I'm on a Maico, I can turn inside this guy no problem"
Going in, he went wide and I stuffed it inside him and roosted away and thought 'man that was too easy!'
Some shots on my "79 400 from the So Cal Vintage MX Classic. Damn thing corners like it's on rails!!
