My wife has never ridden a motorcycle before, but wants to learn. I figured one of the best bikes to learn on was the good old reliable Honda XR75. Tens of thousands of guys our age learned to ride on these bikes, so that should be great for her. I picked up this baby from Ebay. Of course I won't be able to leave it alone. Will style it after my '79 CR250. Will pick up an aluminum swingarm, Fox Airshox, and a set of CR80 leading axle forks. Should be pretty cool.

I had a 77 model first manual clutch bike learned to ride. In the trails by my house me n my brother and neighborhood kids who all had xr 75/80's would ride doubles and play tag. It was the job of who was riding on the back to be the tagger.

Was fun hiding in the bushes then sneak attacking was easy with the stock exhaust. Parents would cringe today cause we never wore any protective gear.

What super condition, how nice is that! I had an XR80 a while back but got rid of it through lack of storage, wish I kept it though but it was abit rough- not like that little beauty. Such an iconic bike really and can totally see why they are sought after.

My cousin had the XR75, we abused that bike so bad and it just kept on keeping on...like the Energizer bunny, lol, but honestly it was such a fun reliable bike. That is a beauty of a bike, as is your 79.

It was kind of interesting how many little rippers back in the day did so good on these, right up until about 1980 even, despite being up against the RM's and YZ's. So wish I had kept mine!

Just like the rest of your bikes, I’m sure it will be super trick.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Hard to argue with Jeff Ward's results on the old XR's.
should be a great bike for her. I probably overpaid a bit for it - $1800 - but it came with gold rims already, which saved me a lot of time, money, and hassle compared to a bike without.
I remember the same thing back in the day - these bikes would run and run forever - even after being stored for years they would start up on the first kick.

Hey does anyone remember if C&J made frames for these bikes? I know some companies made mono shock frames, but I wanna stick with the dual rear shock setup

This is pretty close to what I'm shooting for

But with: red swingarm, natural finish on forks - but with the white plastic fork protectors like the RC's, possibly red engine (gotta think more about that one), white backgrounds with black numbers

Swatdoc, can you please tell me what rim's are on your 79 CR and where to purchase ? I've tried to make out the name from the pic, but my vision...just sucks, lol.

That does not look too far off what you have already and looks like great ideas and improvements.

What we have said about little Rippers, such as Wardy on these XR's, doing so good on these etc, remember there was a very fast kid from the Kent regions here(somewhat Southern England, not far from London) who also had a grey XR75, maybe 1976/77 - think it was very tricked out and he had something to do with the famous road racer Paul Smart (GP rider and Imola 200 winner), who may have sponsored him on this XR75- he was hard to beat around that time and flew on that little grey XR75- abit like an English Wardy!

$1800? - a steal, compared to here that is- maybe worth alot more than that here- guessing may be as much as $2500 here in that lovely condition.

Such a cool little bike and the history and memories these bikes hold for many.

I love those bikes. Don’t think you over paid at all at $1,800.

Ok thanks guys I’m feeling better about how much I paid now.

And yes, as TyDog said - gold rims are from Full Circle Racing. Got quite a few of their rims and will no doubt buy more. They look great. We’ll see how they hold up when I start racing these bikes. Honestly, though, as slow as I am they should be fine!!!

Yes, the price etc- keep it a few more years and if you or your wife haven't fallen in love with it, which you probably have already, then if not sell it. You could even double your money, or at least get alot more than you paid- pretty sure of that.

As we are all saying, these little bikes are loved by thousands of old racers who grew up with them, sure the value will rocket, just like the little 'red rocket'!

Good buy and investment I'm sure and do not think you can go wrong. I reckon that bike here in UK with the gold rims and that condition could be $2500-$3000.
She is a little beauty and enjoy her!

these are the prices I am on about : a 1978 XR75, $3800 (£2895)- reckon yours looks possibly better even or at least as good.

Another question swatdoc... Upon further drooling over your 79, can you give me the info on the shifter ? We'll have to discuss the trick airbox in the near future also. Wink Thanks in advance.

Ledger I think I got the shifter from Stevie. I bought so much stuff several years ago I lost track of some of the details. I can tell you this though - the billet kickstart from Stevie that you see does require modifying the shift shaft. I sent Stevie a '80 shaft, and he cut and re-splined it. With that mod you can then use the different shifter. It's kind of a package deal
