I'm hoping someone might be able to tell me what kind of forks these are. I'm guessing they're Mugen. They came on an '82 CR480 and I assumed they were stock. They needed some love so I sent them to Race Tech and they had no idea what they are. The only bikes I've seen with these are some 125 Mugens (like the one pictured - not mine). I'm guessing this based on the fork lowers - axle pinch clamps and the top part of the lowers as well as the fork cap and internals. Anyone have any thoughts?
Now, since you need a correct front end for the 480, PM Spartacus here on Vital and get the complete front end that I sold him a few months back. He sold the project he was going to put them on. Forks, triples and front hub are all there. Send those to Race Tech.
As for the Mugen forks, if they are correct, you will have no problem selling those for good money. Looks like some chrome pitting in that second pic, but still worth a good chunk of change. Let me know if you want to sell them.

I know what you're saying about the knurled part. I gave up on the idea that they were Mugen until I saw the picture of the bike I posted on here (no knurled part anywhere) The guy I got it from was told by the previous owner that it had works suspension and evidently had several Mugens. Maybe he was right? It does have an Ohlins shock on it, so why not works forks???
I'll let you know Newman if I decide to sell them - I'm not 100% sure yet what I want to do with them - mostly because I'm not sure what they are

The Shop
Looking for my brochure that showed their complete 41mm works fork packages they offered. Probably similar to the 41mm's the RC's used.
Not sure of the exact details but it was something like that.
Anyway, I measured everything up last night against the stock units and while the Mugens are 5/8" shorter from the center of the axle clamp to the top of the fork cap, once in the clamps the Mugens only lose about 1/4" of travel. I'm thinking it's because the lowers are bigger on the Mugens and that give the illusion that I lost a bit of travel with them. Maybe?
I would like to use them on my 480 (it has an Ohlins shock to compliment the forks) for racing. I don't know a lot about them though, like can they be revalved? Would I be better off with Race Tech Gold Valves in the stock units? How would they handle a modern track?
Leave them as they are....clean the internals really goid, change the oil with a quality fork oil, replace any worn bushings, seals etc.....then try then as they are. You may need to add oil, remove oil, get different spring made up etc or you may find them excellent as they are. These are a quality suspension and should be very tunable to your weight and ability level. They are much better than stock forks when properly tuned. If you find you don't like them or can't seem too or don't want to mess with them K can set you up with a rel nice set of Simobs or others to get done thing you are comfortable with on your 480.
That's the best advice I know how to give you regarding forks...you can PM me here if you need more help or simply have questions. More than happy to help a fellow vintage rider out..
