I think I will get a matching 1988 125 when I am done with my 1988 CR250 build.
Brad I was lucky enough after lots of searching to find 2 low hour and very original bikes. So restoration work was fairly minimal.
Sdmx, I haven't ridden them since the rebuilds.
Here's a pic of the 125 in action before I rebuilt it.
The Shop
ATK, the headshake was only on one particular long choppy straight where if I just caught a couple of nasty square edge bumps wrong with the front wheel.
I have restored a couple of 90 CR250's, and are now in the process of restoring my third one .... A bit scary... these bikes tend to multiply....
Got one for riding , a Peak replica and the last one will be an all original resto..
Get the 250 out and ride it, we need more of these great bikes out on the tracks
Yeah the bikes have a funny way of multiplying don't they.....I'm up to five at the minute!!
I'm keen to see your latest resto, hopefully you will get some pics up. I'm midway through building a fairly low hour 2000 CR250 which i fully intend to ride/race. Really looking forward to getting it out and getting some laps in
Absolutely beautiful. Love the fact that so many early 90s bikes are starting to see some love again, funny how things come full circle eh?
Alex the parts are still out there, and you'd be surprised how much OEM stuff is still available. Try your local Honda dealer first and if they haven't got what you need or can't get it...then the internet is your friend. Sad to say it, but sometimes hunting elusive parts down can be as much fun as the build
There are also some really good companies appearing who have really seen the potential in the EVO market, reproducing graphics, trick parts such as Honda Racing ignition and clutch covers etc.
Ewan, I've followed your build thread on your KX125. Amazing work, attention to detail etc. Easy to see how much time, effort and resourcefulness has gone into your bike. Well done
There's nothing better than trawling microfiches and having boxes of genuine NOS parts build up in readiness for the build, it's almost as satisfying as restoring a used part to as new condition!
When I was restoring the KX I was ordering parts from all over, my local Kawi dealer in Glasgow, dealers in Holland & Belgium, the US and Oz. It becomes an addiction and the buzz I'd get from an e-mail confirming stock, then receiving the part from half way around the world was insane, I got carried away and ended up buying shit I didn't even need for future stock piling, I'm sure I could nearly build another up from the spares I have if I bought another frame and front wheel.......
I'm sure I made people smile with the lengths I went to, like the kind lady at Boyesen in Pensylvania who had sorted me out with parts for my 1st gen rad valve over the phone, speaking to Mitch Payton at the MXON trying to get PC to make me a works pipe or calling foreign dealerships armed with part numbers but no knowledge of their native language! I got there in the end and the banter with those that helped me along the way whether it was from vendors or the guys on kx riders.com made it all the more enjoyable.
The Super Evo is going to explode in the UK in the next 5 years, when you see how pre 65, twin shock and evo have blossomed it excites me that early 90s bikes are now getting there time to re-emerge from exile, this was easily my favourite era in MX.
