Making forks from the mid 80's work better

I'm looking at picking up a 1987 KX250 which I'd use for vintage/mxgp racing. What was the hot setup for 87 KX conventional forks? I can't remember when Kawasaki went to cartridge style forks or if that is an option. If I could get some decent 89 46mm's I'd be set. I also have some 91 USD forks.

Or, would it be better to just revalve the stock conventionals?

Race Tech Emulators if you don't want to go through a big swap project. The 89 KX250 forks were very good.

I race/ride a 86 KX250 frequently... After a lot of testing, try 18oz of Mobil 1 5W20 Full Synthetic Motor oil in each leg... I think you will be very happy with the fork performance!

Good article about improving the '87 KX forks.

Not really useful, because of the impossibility to find such a kit nowadays(I think).

88' KX forks were cartridge. They should slide right into the stock 87' triple clamps. Not sure if the wheel or axle changed in 88' or 89' though.
