Blast from the past . . . Who is this famous motocross champion and why is he flat tracking?

The answer is not as obvious as it seems.

Take your best guess . . .

RIP Mike.
I grew up in Lakewood as did Mike.
My long time (of 55 years) friend's step sister was married to Mike. He too lived in Lakewood.
In high school a best friend of my wife's used Mike's home address in order to attend the school of her choice.
Yada yada yada...

Crazy how shit happens. Mike being a healthy 63 years old having a heart attack.

Sorry, but this is NOT Mike Bell . . . This racer spent his entire mx/sx career racing for 1 factory team and is undefeated when it comes to racing the MX des Nations & Trophy des Nations.

That's Rocket Rex Staten at the 1978 Motorcycle Olympiad held at Saddleback. It was a multi-event, multi-format thing. The riders didn't run their national numbers but instead ran the numbers assigned by the promoter. That's why Rex is #39 and not his 1978 AMA MX number, #16

Here's a link to a video from the 1978. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMBI-MXUn3M

Here's a link to a magazine article about the 1977 event. I can't find one on 1978. Anyone?

From the clues (too many! Smile ) and the Des Nations victories- Broc Glover. Although, he did not only ride for one Factory Team, in 1989 he shortly rode for KTM in the GP's - right at the end of his career I think. Think he actually won the last GP race of the season on the KTM and finished a respectable 8th in the championship against some very good and younger riders.

Wouldn't have known why he was flat tracking, but from what people have already mentioned, I would think it was one of those 'crossover' events from back in the day, like half road and dirt.
Like the event that had Magoo and Steve Wise racing each other hard (on works 500 Hondas?), was it 'Superbikers', think was half road and half dirt. Strangely that one event was televised here back in the day on National TV, which was abit unusual, as there did not seem to be much bike events shown way back then.

Looks like Mike Bell. However don’t remember Bell wearing JT gear. Rocket Rex Staton was Yamaha support rider in 78, I vote Rex.

The OP was clearly referring to Broc Glover. But it's Rex Staten.

Hahah- I reckon you maybe cracked it !! Thought there maybe more to it than what have seemed more obvious.

I did wonder about the face guard, does look remarkably similar to Rocket Rex's and also saw a pic of Rocket Rex on number 39, exactly as you saying! Top marksSmile

If I'm not mistaken, I think Glover was #39 one year, or was it Hannah? Whatever!
