Looking to build a Vintage 4-Stroke MX'er

I'll race it, but most likely it will be eye candy in the garage next to my CRF450R'

My requirements needed to race Evo (think thats what its called) are
- Air Cooled
- Drum brakes

I thought about taking a XR400R and installing older CR250 Drum wheels and maybe older CR480R Plastic.. but I'm open to other ideas.

Or buying a CR480R and shoe-horning in a XR400R motor to build a vintage 4-stroke replica (less disc brakes)

C&J frames are an option, but just more than I'm looking to spend..

Even thought about buying a 1984 RM250 and stuffing in a 4-stroke... but they look damm unconformable to ride.

A mate of mine built this a few years ago. A Husky frame with a Suzuki SP400 engine. Lovely reliable bike.

We had a guy racing the Texas EVO series about 10 years ago that did really well on a 83 or 84 Honda XR350. It wasn't much off the start but he never shut that little bastard off and it was Hell on inside lines. He had to convert the front end from a disc to a drum and he must have done some motor work to it, but it was unbelievably competitive.

About 10 years ago I rode a XR 400 with a White Bros 440 kit and the A Loop Seat and Tank on it. That was one of the most fun bikes I've ever ridden.

We were riding out near Banning Ca. Hilly tight trails.....

Is that bike a Cheney? What engine is that? Very cool machine! I plan on building a thumper one day too. I'd love to build an Aberg 500 or maybe even a 500 triumph in a C&J or Cheney frame.

If you're still looking for ideas, I'd look at late '90's e-start DR 350. There was a lot of hop up stuff being done to them back then. I rode one in the Suzuki Nat. Dual sport series back then, as many of then as I could. That 350 did a great job , especially after I had Doug Harvey (in Florida) do the suspension.

My cousin and riding buddy had one too. He had Race Tech do his suspenders front & rear, plus Thumper Racing welded up the swing arm .

Did I mention electric start????Smile

I'm leaning toward taking a XR400R and removing the disc brakes and installing 84 CR500R tank, seats and fenders. I was told it can be done, but have yet to see it.

It seems the craze is to build bikes that never existed back in the day , to be nostalgic.

Triumph engined Maico's , WTF is that all about.

HL replica Yamaha is perfect.

Rod Spry in the UK is selling some CCMs. A 1979, a 1974 and a rare 1972. They won't be cheap though.

This is the 79 bike:

Here is the 74

And this is the 72
