I need some opinions - 91 YZ250, 01 RM250 or 06 RM250

OK, the 91 YZ250 looks very rough but is only $250. Needs side panels and "top end to run". I'm guessing this would be a COMPLETE rebuild from front to rear including plastics...

01 RM250 has "new top end" - all parts seem to be there for $1K

06 RM250 "low hours" for $2.5K

Should I drop the 2.5K or go cheap and rebuild?

Just looking for some thoughts and opinions!

Thanks

If low hours means less than 20 and it's 100% original, I would buy the '06 RM.

I think the way I would look at it is the 91 is to old to be competitive on and will most likely need to be completely rebuilt or face nothing but on-going problems (I be there done that a few times). The 01 is still and old bike and unless the owner can prove the bottom end, clutch, and other parts have low hours you may end up putting a bunch of money into it and left with a 10 year old bike. So in my opinion spend the money for the 06, plus the 06 is a great bike.

But I will tell you I did buy a 2002 CR250 over the winter that truly had low hours on it for $1000 and I love it. I was so glad I did not spend the 7k+ on a new 450 Smile

Depends on what you want it for.

If you want a trouble free rider, go with the 06.

If you want hours of endless fun in the shed playing with bikes, get the 91 YZ. I'd love to rebuild one of those to original spec Wink

buy the 06 RM to ride and thrash.

I thought about that - considering vintage racing if the bike is old enough...

Not sure about your vintage clubs in FL, but our club here in North Texas has classes for 10 and 20 year old bikes, in addition to the regular vintage and post-vintage classes. The Decade and Dos XX classes actually get the best turnouts here.

I had an '06 RM250 and it was great. Go with that IMO. I had '01 RM125 that blew up like Chinese fireworks factory. If the 250 was anything like the 125, skip that.

Depends on what you want to race/ride.

if you're really thinking about the vintage thing, buy the 06 RM, and then hold out and wait for a 90ish WR500 to pop up and do a replica of wht bradshaw ran in the 500 class that year. plus, they're aircooled, it doesnt get any easier than that to work on.

Get the 91 YZ!

This is my 91. It has the 92 Yamaha race team orange/blue graphics and front fender. I just need the 92 front number plate and some number 4's to be an almost 1992 Bradshaw replica. And the shock spring is still magenta, it could use some blue paint, and the "Bradshaw" script decals on the front fender.

Every now and then you have to blow the cobwebs out of the old bikes in the garage otherwise it makes no sense to keep them.
