I bought a 1996 CR250.......

Well I bought a really bad looking 1996 CR250. The bike has spark and good compression. It worked when the prevoius owner bought it a year ago. He decided it was too much of a project after sitting in his garage for a year and sold it to me for $450. The bike looks bad. It has been spray painted. Even the plastic is painted. The shocks need seals, the case has JB weld, and the tires need to be replaced. Someone must have added a hydraulic clutch to it.

I figured I would see if it will start. Then take it apart and get rid of the spray paint. Put Neal seals in the shocks, new tires, and whatever else it needs to get it decent. What do you think?

Looks like a solid start. I have brought a few of these 92-96 CRs back to life and I have started with much much worse! Keep us updated on the build!

Good question, I do not know. Now that you say it. The front rim is gold and the back rim is silver.

The trees look stock and forks look like Honda Kayaba. So does the disc look Honda. I’m not familiar with Yamaha set ups but most of that looks Honda CR 96 to me.

Great find.

That would be a fun project. Strip it, clean it, powder coat the frame, rip apart the engine and paint it... good times.

Cool project.
Those are indeed Yamaha forks. Hondas have squared axle lugs not rounded. Also the fork guard and guard guide set up is quite different. Most likely pre 04 Yz forks. Measure the bottom sanctions. If they are 48mm they are 04 and if they are smaller they are older.

Throw a set of 97-07 + CR 250 forks on it, you will like!

We got her started. I have not been able to ride I yet. It was storming here real bad. It has 180lbs of compression in the cylinder. How is that for a 1996 CR250?

I will probably stay with the current forks right now to save money. How do I tell the exact model of the forks and the rear shock? Both need oil and new seals.
Also, what kind of oil do I put in the rear shock?

The fork guard guides and lugs are Yamaha, the forks look exactly like my 01 YZs

Decent fork but nothing special imo

Right on man... I picked up this McGrath replica and the first mod I did was twin chamber Showa forks from a 2008 CRF450. Light years ahead of the stock KYBs. Let me know if you want me to run through everything needed for the swap

The best is to have a shop do service of the rear shock, you need special tools and nitrogen

No problem dude.... btw, I rebuilt my rear shock myself and it was my first time doing it... If you have any mechanical knowledge, it's very simple. It does require a few special tools like a seal bullet, but they're cheap and good to have in the arsenal. I enjoyed doing mine so much I ended up doing a few buddies shocks too. If you wanna give me your email, I'll send you a 9 page PDF file that's a step-by-step with photos for how to do the job. I think I spent like $45 in parts plus $5 for a nitrogen fill from my local shop. Don't forget to re-spring the shock for your weight... I picked up my Factory Connection spring on ebay for like $85.. Race Tech's site will tell you what spring rate you need http://www.racetech.com/VehicleSearch

Torn down

All done

Regretfully the project is dead for me. I took the epoxy off that was on the case and found a large whole. The left case will have to be replaced. I did not want to fool with slitting the case and finding a 1996 case so I sold it to someone willing to take on the challenge. Now I have time to work on my 1986 CR125. Here is a pic of the hole:

Sorry to hear! I have had pretty good luck with finding cases on eBay that ended up working well, but is is a gamble for sure.
