So I am building a budget 79 YZ400 as a backup to my 465 for EVO racing. I have found where the 465 front end will directly swap over to the 400 but wonder about a 82 490 front?

I've made the swap on my '79 YZ250. 43mm with triples.

I know everybody likes the 465 front end. Is it better than the 490? Did they make any changes between the two? I have access to a 490, but if the 465 is better I would rather wait.

490 and 465 are the same fork tubes. if you can get the complete 490 front end it will bolt right into your triple clamps. You might need the 490 backing plate if you are using your 400 wheel.

Thanks, but I believe the 400 has smaller fork tubes so I would need the triples as well. I do realize the 465 and 490 forks are both 43mm but was wondering if they changed the internals and if so did they improve the 490 forks or get worse.

OK thanks. So I guess the question would be did they change anything in the fork from 81 thru 84? I thought I read something that the 490 might have went to longer forks?

IT forks were mostly 38mm into the early 80s. If you can find a set of 80 YZ 465 forks they came with 43mm and had the old single lever braking plate boss location verse the newer location used for the DLS brake plate.

If you go 81-84 you'll need the DLS brake plate to go with it and a set of tripple clamps. I personally like the later year clamps with the non tilted bar clamp location. Up to 87 works.

My 79 400 has 80 465 forks on it with RT emulators and they work great.
