Restoring an ‘83 CR125. I’ve already split the cases and replaced all of the bearings. Tranny is good and back in, cases re-assembled. As I have only ever restored old XRs, I’m a little in the dark on crank seals. I have them pressed in, backside facing out, but do they sit flush to the outer edge of their seat or are they supposed to be recessed? .

Any guidance from and old 2-smoker would be appreciated.

I press them just passed the chamfered ring, making sure it's on the line-bored surface

By “backside” I mean the flat side is facing outboard of the cases and the hollowed side is facing the crank. Dammit, am I in backwards?

Incidentally, I am using the factory repair manual but the photos and step-by-step instructions suck.

When i look at the seal, the "flat" side is front and the side with sealing-lip and spring is "backside".
I have installed a seal backwards on purpose once, beacuse there was damage on the surface, and it worked. But that was on a 50cc Franco morini..

I once learned that the spring always has to show the medium. or to the side where pressure arises so that the lip sealed.hope you understand what I want to say.
