I have just picked up a 125 1983 with an ohlins shock my question is should I rebuild it or spend my money on something else

were the ohlins of 83 any good ?

Is there a better alternative ( white power )

Is the standard shock the better option

I have a £500 budget and would need the shock to work for a 190lb rider of an enthusiastic novice ability

What i dont want to do is restore the ohlins to find that I could of had a better option

For £500, I dont think you'll get a better shock!!

You could go for a Works Performance Unit, (I personally feel they are little better than Ohlins) but a new WksP shock is £800+, although, you can get there "heart transplant" kits that go into the original shocks for a lot less. Delivery in time for Farliegh could be a bit tight (very very tight!!) aswell!!

£500 should see the Ohlins re-built, serviced, set up correctly and ready to rock! Give Johno White at KAIS a call, he's the guy I'd send any Ohlins to. He knows his stuff and is well into the EVO's and Twinnies.
Serviced and set up correctly the std rear shock is pretty good but not really close to Ohlins or WksP standard!

Am I seeing things or is that shaft way off center Newman? If so what the heck happened?

For what it is worth I have an Ohilins on my 83 CR250 with the extended Simons link and it works great. Mine is from 83 and I had it completely redone. I have had friends that don't ride old bikes ride it that just can't believe how well it does.

Anybody want to guess what the waterpump looks like on this bike?

What the hell Newmann!!?? What happpened? Looks like the shaft has broken?

I've seen it before, but I'm always amazed when stuff like this happens! At Farliegh each year, there usually at least one bike that has a shock blown apart and hanging off!!

The shaft was broken at the base of the threads. Was on a 83 CR480 at the Rio Bravo AHRMA race last year and not sure if it just broke or if there was a clearance issue that caused it to fail.

Any chance of a photo of the simons link?

There is a lot to be done for Farleigh ,I am just trying to get there in some shape or form but on a limited budget it will be tough I may start a seperate thread to keep everyone up to date on progress

I have noticed a lot of other people fit the swing arm from the 84 is there an advantage in this ?

Unfortunately I suck at taking pictures of stuff and while I do have a few of my suspension it does not really explain it. The below blog really shows it on a 480. Essentially it is a link I think 2" longer on the bottom that utilizes the oblong holes forward of the stock holes in the frame. You can clearly see it in this well documented restore.

http://1983cr480.blogspot.com/2010/02/suspension.html

They key is having the tabs that allow for it to be mounted without movement in the oblong hole on both sides. Below is a shot of what one looks like. I was told the theory is that it creates less tension on the chain in when the suspension is compressed. I really like the combo on mine.

In truth I am not positive they were available for the 83 125 as they changed the engine/drive setup so much but I have to think so. Nice original cover there-don't see those much for an 83cr125.

I will look forward to the pictures.

The swing arm bolt took some persuading to come out but with a little heat and penetrating oil and a bit of help with the grinder it gave up so I was able to remove the engine

It drew blood but it won't piss me off any more
I had the engine out for a bit of a closer look and have salvaged some parts
The swing arm had been run without a chain guard at some point and the back axle is also stuck in the rear wheel so I have put these to one side
I have had the frame blasted while I waited today so I could see how much damage there was it has some welding for the brake bar and the subframe is snapped on one side which I think is a common problem
More photos to follow

Good thing is, when you get done, you'll have no doubt that every part will be new or reconditioned to function as new!

I am glad that I collected parts for this project prior to starting it it took two years to track down an original clutch/ waterpump cover I think it is great that so many people are keen enough to share their knowledge to keep these bikes running
Since having the frame blasted it is away having some welding carried out including the removal of the makeshift side stand so I will up date with some pics towards the end of the week if there is interest
I am also busy on the plastics

I remember on some early 83 CR frames there was a problem with cracking. Im not sure of where exactly. It might be a good idea to see if anyone remembers and strengthen that area with a gusset.

I remember the frame crack issue because i helped my friend switch over an entire bike to a new frame after his practice in time to make his first moto. And nothing fell off
Is that honestly the bike you are rebuilding Billysled?

Keep us posted on the progress. I have one of these bikes but not very knowledgeable about them...I do know I need to go through the gearbox as it just falls out of gear every time it gets airborne.

The gearbox problems are an area to be explored I have been told that some parts from an 84 gearbox will fix this but it has to be down to worn parts surely ?

I went to see the frame being welded today and all seemed ok I will post some more photos over the weekend with more progress

does anyone know the RAL code for the flash red paint ?

MaxPower

yes this is the bike that I am building however I have been planning this for a while so have collected a few parts already and have a bottom end of an engine built but not polished ready to go in as well as a set of wheels so i am not starting from zero

It does seem the more you do the more you find to do and I am just looking to get there this year and then devlop the bike over the next season

I have given the frame its first coat there is still plenty of prep to be done with it as I go through its coats this week but was pleased with the colour
I also split the remainder of the engine and have put any thing salvageable in one pile and the rest in scrap
I weighed the flywheel which is about 800g as opposed to 550 for the flywheel off my 87
Made me wonder about lightning the 83 wheel down or to try and fit a later ignition and lighter flywheel

I can't say ive seen too many bikes recreated from a starting point as you have.Either you really enjoy a challenge or have a scarce supply of 1983 Honda 125s there. You will have every reason to be very proud of yourself when you're done with this bike Billyslad

The stock 83 fw is probably 1000g, its just that 450g flaked off in rot
