How can i tell the differense in 82 vs 83 right side crankcase?

Here is a picture of a 82 nos right side case. The 82 480 cases are red and the 83 is black. Either someone painted the 82 cases black or the factory made a mid year color change, I have seen many 82's with black cases.
Maybe someone else can chime in...does the casting numbers indicate the year?

Unless someone painted it red, it is an 81 450 case. I just went through this on an 82 480 that I'm rebuilding. On the plus side, it seems like there are more right cases available than left, because I couldn't locate a good left case.

Does anyone know if the 83 case is the same as the 82? I put a hole in the case of my 83 and can't seem to find a case other than the 82

There are different part numbers on 82 vs 83 both side, maybe a little wider for the 5-speed gearbox?
I have read a thread about interchange cases on 480 earlier, but i cant find it..

I’ve worked on both plenty of times, 82 and 83. The only difference I can think of is the 83 has one extra bolt on the left side/clutch cover. No difference in right.

I know about the extra bolt in left front, but the right side?
Guess i have to measure, was hoping there was an easy way to tell the year.. and if i can use 83 gearbox in 82 cases, or 83 left and 82 right?

Do you know if there is any differense in cylinders?

I’m almost positive it’ll all interchange. Look at the tag under the countershaft on the right case to get the year. Plug and play.

82/83 Right hand case are interchangeable. The Left hand cases aren't. They are wider for the 5spd gear set.
