Nice. Sue is riding newer bike than yours.
I'm trying to figure out where the start is in the picture above. It used to be at the base of Suicide hill. But it looks different.

Hey guys, I've really enjoyed reading through this thread. I grew up in El Paso and rode plenty of times on what was once the Borderland Motocross Track. For some reason everybody called it "Star Track" when I rode there. I have no idea where the name came from but I used to ride there just about every week around 2001 to 2005 or so. It was basically just a desert track with up and downhills, rough whooped-out straights, sand berms, etc. I'm going back to El Paso later this month and have some pictures that I can post of the track. I love the pictures you guys have put up from the 1970's, awesome!

The name "Star Track" was selected by vote of the Southwest Dirt Riders Association in the late winter/early spring of 1977. The president of the Southwest Dirt Riders Association was Mr. LaPointe and he organized the races. His son was a fast rider. That was the end of the name Borderland. Here is a list of the Rider's Standings at the Star Track in May of 1977:

I have ridden with Steve Fox and Robert Phillips. I used to ride out in Vado, NM with them on weekends, which are numerous sets of desert trails off of I-10 between El Paso and Las Cruces (great riding by the way). Steve Fox owns a car dealership in El Paso. Tracy McIntyre, who is also listed there, owned Team Mr. Motorcycle in El Paso. Several other familiar names on that list, thanks for sharing!

During the mid to late 70's some of the better racers included:
Pete Tanner, Scott Logston, Tommy Wicker, Andy Palafox, Maybe McIntyre, and Dean Ulve.
Occasional guest riders included Steve Wise and Carlos Serrano.
Wow, Spent many weekends there. Did not race much but just loved the smell of premix with Bel Ray. Tommy Wicker was a good friend of mine. That guy would race 80, 100 & 125 expert class all in the same day. He was a freak of nature. The Stahmann Farms track was a rough son of gun but so much fun.

I was told to look this post up and rode there many times. Even won the "mother's day" race back in the mid 70's. You don't find great up and down hills like that anymore and to think we did those without much suspension to boot. I still have photo albums and old cycle news articles about the track and riders somewhere (I'll try and find). Still riding (mostly cross country) so if anyone is in or around the Dallas/Ft Worth area let me know

Me (Satterfield) on Pete Tanner's 125 TM Suzuki (a little young for the big bikes but turned out OK)

Mother's Day race. How great is that to get your mom to even attempt to get on with you!

Mike,
NIce post and great pictures. That's a great shot of you on the TM125. Also looks like you weren't a big fan of gloves...must have big time calluses.
You were doing well in the expert classes in 1977. What kind of bikes were you riding then?

Corner of Borderland and McNutt. How many times did I drive this road? A bunch.

View of track from top of Horseshoe looking back toward the three hills (Suicide and whatever we called hill 2 and 3). All grown up in salt cedar. Homes on top where the pits used to be. I still found old sparkplugs in the dirt.

Anyone remember Arvol Brumley? I had lunch with him on one of my trips to El Paso. He still looks the same and is still driving school buses for the Ysleta School District.

Wow, was doing a search trying to find old motocross tracks I used to ride in the early 70's. I rode this track once in 1972. We came down with some guys from T or C New Mexico. I was 14 years old riding a 1970 Husky 250 in the amateur class. As I recall, the starting line then was at the base of what I believe you are referring to as Suicide Hill. After the start we went down a long straight then up a sandy hill, hard left then through some nasty whoops (with 4 inches of rear suspension, all whoops were bad). Down a hill and through some trees? Don't remember the rest, except that the bikes went up Suicide Hill. On the day I raced, they routed the 250 amateur and all 125 & 100 classes back onto the straight instead of up the hill, too many couldn't climb it in practice. The main reason I remember the track is because I hit the whoops riding way over my head, went into violent tank slappers, went over the bars and the Husky landed on top of me. That Trelleborg rear knobby came down spinning on my back (big ouch). Drug myself out from under the bike, got to my knees just in time to get slammed into the ground by a Yamaha. Whoever he was, he turned out to be a great guy. Dropped his bike, made sure I was okay, got my machine off the track for me, and helped me off. I managed to ride the rest of the lap to the pits and gave it up. Never got to ride the track again.. Brother was riding a 400 Husky that day, I still own and ride his machine in Vintage +50 motocross. Couldn't remember the name Borderlands, but reading all your descriptions, I am sure this is track we rode. Enjoyed all your pictures and comments.

This track was around long before my time. From the stories I've heard, I really wish it was still in existence. There's only one track in El Paso now, but it's super small and more like a long arenacross track than an outdoor motocross track.

Did any of you race at Tularosa, too?

Never did race Tularosa. Good track? New Mexico tracks that I can remember riding were Stahman Farms in Las Cruces, Carlsbad, Truth or Consequences and La Luz outside of Alamagordo.

If anybody wants to look at the old riding area, go to Google Maps and type in Santa Teresa High School, Santa Teresa NM. Directly across McNutt Rd. you will see Borderland (if you are in satellite view). You can make out Horseshoe back toward the meat plant if you zoom in. There are houses up in the pit area with a house right at the top of where Suicide was.

I remember racing at Star Track back in 1979 -1982. I used to love the Saturday night races under the lights (and the cooler temps).

These are a couple of pictures of Scott Logston's bike and him racing back in the day. The bike was a 1980 Cr 125 that he was racing for a shop in either Las Cruces or El Paso.

Brings back great memories Jim, thanks for posting the pics. I've often wondered what happened to that track, I now live in northern Colorado and haven't been back to Las Cruces (where I grew up) for 20 years now. I figured this was what it became, but I'm not surprised, there were some great views from those pits!
