Lowered the intake 3mm look at the photos, you can my scribe lines. Set the piston in the bore and scribed it also to see when exactly the exhaust port opened and that gave me my max to lower the intake and wide 2mm on each intake window.

Transfer ports where smoothed and matched to cylinder
Exhaust had some issues, matched the ports who've wides and raised .5mm went very conservative this area

Get some layout dye and. Be real conservative. Head was skimmed to assure it was flat surface, did a few tricks to the crankshaft also. Still playing with a flat carb, that's more to do with the air box side
I have a Mikuni flat slide too, looks like it would be a pain due to the length of the intake bell but is interesting. I like where you are going, I have similar plans.

I cut the carb intake spigot on the lathe, now it fits fine, my issue is the airbox boot being to short, purchased a 1980 boot has the length, however, the 79 box has the filter mount where I need to cut. Can be worked out just haven't got back to it. Actually with the updated porting this thing rips, stock carb working pretty good.

Nice work Steve . You score extra vintage points with me running a milk crate stand.
I'm amazed when I see a old a RM that has a strait brake arm and isn't bent from throwing the bike on a stand or milk crate

Looking good, you don't see a lot of these bikes around, with a little tweaking they can run with the best.

Thanks, yeah I was surprised about that brake arm too.. I have a couple 83 RM125s that both have bent ones. I'm Going to strip and paint this one once I get new bushings/bearings for the ends.
Took awhile to find a brake panel spacer that sits between the panel bearing and the axle. Thankfully one showed up on Ebay recently.

Hi Guys, I've got a set of RM250N/400N decals I created over 10 years ago with Photoshop if anyone is interested. Link is a Youtube of my RM250N uploaded last year.

Ok.. Now I'll safely say it's done. I had the forks done and a few other details since my last post. Took it for a ride and she runs real good. Looking to possibly upgrade the shocks if anyone has some Works Performance w/ reservoirs, or even Ohlins if they're out there..

I would start with these guys... Don't take those Progressive's you have on the bike now on anything but a manicured track if your a front pack rider. Just got into vintage racing and put a lot of money into the restoration of a 79 RM400 last year and raced the bike with those shocks (won 3 out of 6 motos and never finished lower than 3rd Smile on it as I couldn't justify the $$$ for good shocks until I knew I was going to keep or like the bike and saved the bike from crashing dozens of times on kickers and braking bumps. Also, get these if you want to live ;-) they work great!

Thanks alot for the info. I'll check them out. I was also thinking of grafting on a set of 98 RM conventional forks because I heard there are people that have made brackets to mate a drum brake to them.. keeping the bike legal for vintage competition. Ever hear any info about that?

Very nice! Were you able to use the stock 89 triple clamps and stem? I've seen people have to press out the stem from the clamps and retro fit one in there.

Yes, just a little machining to the stem to accept the 78 ball bearing race. I went with 17" rear shocks and rode the bike once on a groomed track and it was pretty decent, did it for fun and sold it on Ebay a few years ago as I was recovering from a mx injury and took some time off racing.

I need a filter cage for 1980 RM250, but they seem unobtainable. I took a look at the fiche and was surprised to find that there is no cage called out, unlike the 79 RM250-400. The 1980 RM250-400 seems to be kind of a stand alone model for this part. The original filter is still available from Suzuki, and the picture shows a cage in the filter. My question to all you 79-80 enthusiasts is; do you think the OEM filter includes a cage?

May have to call a dealer they can contact Suzuki parts dept. and have that checked. Good question, I see it in there, however the question is did the part # supersede and eliminate the cage, I'm thinking it did. Otherwise purchase one from a later model and modify it, I cut out the 79 sealed and pop riveted it to my airbox.

1979 Daytona Supercross, #134. I had one day of practice on that bike, box stock, put tires on it and raced! That's Marty Tripes #48, Gary Semics #27, Rick Burgett #4 behind!

Anybody running some air in the forks of their 79 or 80 RM? I put much stiffer springs in mine and it still dives pretty badly and bottoms easily. Very unbalanced from the rear which has also been stiffened up. I was thinking about running 5-6 psi in the forks. Just like they did back then. Anybody doing similar? Forks currently have 15wt oil and .46 springs. I weigh 225, Vet A rider.

Yeah, I'm doing a 79 RM250 for this fall's Vintage season in Florida. Everyone who seems serious about racing these upgrade to 43mm forks. I've put 87 CR500 43mm cartridge forks on mine. I'm sure I'll go stiffer as I'm 200lbs, myself. Glad to see others doing these bikes. As I clean things up I'll post some pics of my project.

Yeah I'm workin on getting a set of 43s but I have a race in 2 weeks and this is what I have for now. Forks are definitely junk but going to try some air in them. Track I'm racing on is very Supercross style, should be interesting. Bringing my 06 RM 250 for the modern class race that day.. That'll be fun.

Not sure how other did their conversion, I pressed the stem from the 79 into the 84 clamps, I had to machine a little off the bottom clam to clear the frame and steering stops, no that difficult. Had 17.5 shocks everyone said was the ticket, made the bike so high ended up with 16.5 on the rear. Also mounted the 77 Rm125 tank, no need for that capacity for vintage. Fun project

My 79 ran best with 20lbs in each fork leg, people said I was nuts but the forks worked very well even after casing a triple it didn't bottom on a modern MX track (I got it next lap, needed to to win race)
