99 CR500, what to do

So I just acquired a 99 CR500 and plan on racing MX with it. Is there a newer rear shock that will fit this chassis? Just wondering which route people have tried before and was happy with? Or is the rear shock good enough to just service, respring and go on with? I already have front CRF forks getting ready for it so front end is taken care of. And any other advice on bike set up? Already has PC expansion chamber.

Good question, the bike tests of these is hard to find. From my experience with CR500s (87 and 94) I never had a problem with the shock (or the forks really). I did have the forks done on my 94 and it helped on bottoming, but the shock was always fine stock.

Just have the shock rebuilt/sprung/revalved & tell your susp. tuner you will be upgrading to a newer front end, will likely need to be much stiffer to balance out the chassis with newer/larger forks. I have 08 crf450 forks on my 96 cr250, Shock was redone to work with forks, the rear shock works good, could use slightly stiffer high speed compression but o/all works good.

My '01 was revalved/sprung front and rear by a local tuner and it's surprising how well it works. Versatile too. I've raced it Off-road (Hare Scrambles) and Moto and I can get it setup pretty well for either. Less compression and lighter rebound on the clickers for Off-road and back to a more standard clicker setting for Moto. Coupled with a Scott's stabilizer, it's been a fun machine to have in the line-up.
