I have purchased and had shipped, at great expense(you would be surprised how expensive it is to ship 3 lbs to Canada), sidepanels and a rear fender for the 1982 CR480 I am doing up for vintage moto. They are very very red, too red, stupid red, There is orange in my tank, and front fender, and frame, this plastic is wrong.
My theory is that they are for a 1981 CR450, and Maiers fitment guide is flawed. Does anyone have any light they can shed on this before I sell the whole project and take up bird watching?
The terms "Tahitian Red" "Flash Red" "Fighting Red" "Red" and "Orange" have driven me to drink.

I believe they used 'Tahitian Red' up until about 88' when they went to a darker red called 'Fighting Red'.

Keep in mind that the frame paint and tank color may have faded or become discolored from 1982 and still may not match.

Here's one from Maier in the Tahitian red:

Tahitian red is the color of "Red Rocket" -78 -79 until -81, not sure of -82 model.
-83 is Flash Red (more orange then the others)
and until 87 (i think)

mxrose, see, this is where it gets weird. On Maier's website they call the equivalent color of Tahitian Red, "Fighting Red", (https://maier-mfg.com/20540-honda-cr250-cr450-cr480-side-panels.html) so that's what I ordered. And its not even remotely close. I understand the fading, but the Maier plastic does not even have a hint of orange in it. The plastic is well made, and fits fine, its just the wrong color. Maybe it was right for the 81 450, which, if I recall, was quite red. From what I have been able to gather, 83 and newer were "Flash Red", which is the orangy color, and 81 and before were "Tahitian Red", it seems my 82 lies somewhere in the middle. I may just suck it up and buy a complete set from DC or VMX and hope like hell they match the tank somewhat. Its just that I'm $300 cdn to the bad already for the fender and sidepanels(our dollar sucks and shipping is pricey)

Just remember that DC Plastic has a coarse, grainy and dull finish to it. If you already have one set of plastic you aren't happy with, keep that in mind so you aren't disappointed in a second set. VMX is nice and shiny.

Newbie poster/ longtime lurker here. I have DC on my 83 480 and the color match to the stock tank is great. Some of the grainy look can be mitigated by liberal application of Maxima SC-1.

Yeah, your right. Maier really screwed it up. I'm pretty sure yours is still the 'Tahitian Red'. DC maybe the only choice.

If this is the color you are looking for, Maier calls it orange, or Honda orange
