Hey all, I really need some help here. Can someone take a look at the below photo and tell me if this is the correct timing alignment marks for the rotor & stator at top dead center for 76 CR125 Elsinore? The Clymers manual is not really helpful so I thought I would ask. I Installed a Mototek CD125 and the bike ran pretty good, but I felt it was not pulling beyond the stock limiter as it should so I advance the timing per the Mototek instructions (1/4" to the right) and now the bike only want's run when the choke is on? I have moved the stator back and forth and the bike just seems to be running lean yet the blue smoke tells me it rich. I shot some WD40 all over the motor to ensure I don't have any leaks, I just don't understand why it won't run without the choke while it appears to be rich? I set the timing back to the photo below and it still wants to bog out without the choke? Help!

What's your spark plug look like? Sounds to me like it could be a crank seal if it still won't run right after you put everything back to normal. But now that I think about it... blue smoke.. nevermind. If it was me I'd advance the timing and mess with the jetting. I have a 125 that won't run until it gets hot.

Pilot jet clean?
Float level set correctly?
Fresh fuel mix?
Has the bike set with old fuel mix in it?
Have you ohm checked the coil?

Plugged pilot jet?

Set the timing with a dial indicator through the spark plug hole.

Lastly, I don't care if the Mototek is NOS, trick as shit and cost a small fortune.....it is still 40 years old. PVL, just saying. Eliminates ignition issues from the equation altogether. I can get you a good deal on one in either analog or digital for the old girl.

Find TDC and put a sharpie mark across the rotor/mag -- you can do a bit of math and figure out the distance to move the mag based on the desired degree advance.

Newmann is right about the new electronic ignitions. I would take a PVL over a Mototek any day if I was going to race it.

My first question would be - did the bike run fine with the stock ignition? Can you re-install to make sure no other issue is plaguing you? This would eliminate the seal or carb issue.

I use a battery powered timing light. No matter what you line up or measure, a good timing light can save you a lot of head aches. Took me years to figure that out. Plus is a quicker and more reliable way to check for spark. (Famed YZ 250A not firing under compression, worked fine in the traditional ground the plug and kick).

I have been wanting to install a Mototek, but now I am thinking my procrastinating is finally paying dividends!!!

Good luck

Thanks everyone, the stock ignition worked fine, I only took it off because the Mototek raises the rev limiter. If someone can tell me if I am spot with the timing marks in the above photo at TDC, then I will reinstall the stock ignition and call it a day.

Also, I have a dail indicator and have no problem finding TDC, I just need to know if the marks in my photo are correct (stator & rotor).

Mike, just found an OEM owner's manual and that looks correct according the manual.
