Can't seem to find much info/test on one. Any one had one or tried it out. Potential to get one and thought it'd make a good AHRMA Innovation class and practice/play bike to save the Montesa and YZ465 for race days.

H, think Matt's is a '85-'86. IIRC they upgraded suspension in '88 ? As I don't have a modern bike anymore or ride much these days looking at getting something that is stone cold reliable and somewhat low maintenance to ride on practice days and Rio on a 500 is like butter !!!

Larry, stopped 490 in 1990 then came out with the WR500 (still air cooled) in '91 or '92 ? Bradshaw was racing one in the 500 Nats.

I have a 1990 YZ490, I restored it from a $300 turd, now it's got a full Tom Morgan Racing motor among other things. '88 to 90 are identical except for 88 and 89 have different tank graphics and then 90 had the same graphics as 89 but had speed blocks on the seat cover.

Someone stuffed a WR500 engine in a YZ250 frame here in the ATL area a few years ago... wish I'd taken a pic or two.

that 90 for 1800 is a great deal!, i love 490s and yes they are dependable, dont bother trying to make them stop pinging, they will live forever rattling like a sun of a bitch, they are fairly slow, but thats good you dont need 50 hp with that chassis, in 88 they removed the Bass and put on cartrige forks that makes them a little better, i raced them from 84-88 then i got one for vintage in 2010 rode it for a while then cleaned it up and paaaaaked it

That's a really nice '87
It's not too hard to stop them pinging, a good pipe and race gas stops it you can also get the squish band on the head modded but I've found with all mine that just a pipe and good gas works fine.

I ride a 1988 and love it, they don't like tracks with tight turns and lots of jumps but they are fun on more natural style tracks, I cut the vibration down on my 490 to cr500 levels and I raised the compression and still got rid of the pinging with some minor jetting and race fuel, I did have some tranny problems but Pete24 helped sort those out, I think it's a good bike that good a bad rap, Jeff Stanton rode an 88 pretty good, and Kurt lungquist raced the 89 world championship on one, if you go on YouTube to the 1989 motocross des nations there is some good footage of Kurt on the 490

I agree, the YZ490 is a way better bike than people give it credit for, it may of had a few minor problems out of the box but what bike doesn't. The guys you mention rode them great, Lungqvist actually rode one a couple of times in '87 so well that he ended up on the YZM to replace the hurt Vimond also let's not forget Glover's performances on them against the mighty RC Honda's and his performance at Hollister on one in 88

Yes vmx3 the disk came off a yz125, dgy made the bike in 1988, Eric gorr did the motor, it was a nice bike, I got the yoko gear from an importer in England named ci sport, or comerfords international, my current bike bike doesn't have a disk in the rear, I raced it in the nesc spring series finishing 4th overall in the 55 plus class, in the old geezers class it doesn't matter what you ride, you're part of international air hammer right?

Yes, I am part of Team International air Hammer, we dig 490's and try to keep them out there.
