The Black Ops Moto ignition coil is an entire coil. Nothing like a Roost Boost. They are sold for current machines so they have to be an improvement over a 25+ year old stock part. Everyone i know that has put one on thier bike still has it on their bike.

Yeah I see they have a part number listed for the 83-04 KX125.

Would you say the power increase from BlackOps is more than say a PC pipe?

I don't know since I've the only PC pipe I had was on my 94 CR125 and to me I wouldn't have bought it a second time. But a PC pipe looks way cooler and your bike deserves a works looking pipe. I would think the coil may be better in some situations as in my experience I notice a gain in mid range mostly and I would think a pipe would be top end.
Ride your bike. Get it dialed. I'll send you my coil to try to see if it's worth the money to you. If you like it I'll get you the best price it can be gotten for. If not then you tried

Took bike out for an initial ride last weekend. Jetting is off. Feels like it wants to load up around 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Even running WFO there is an excessive amount of smoke and wet black oil is starting to form on the end of the exhaust tip. I'm running VP 110 with Super Techniplate at 32:1.

Performance is mediocre... which is kinda what I remember the mags writing back in the day. Has a noticeable mid hit then flatlines on top.

This bike is completely stock except for a Boyesen RAD valve (oem manifold was cracked and couldn't find a NOS replacement). Still has the stock pipe and silencer.

I don't remember the main jet I installed; it's either 145 or 147.5. Pretty sure I went with stock pilot and clip in 3rd spot. Carb has a brand new $120 slide, float needle, screws and gaskets. Fuel bowl height is set to factory spec.

Will pull bowl this week to confirm main jet size, but it seems like the bog/loading issue is either clip or pilot maybe. Then again maybe my main is still off due to the smoke and spooge.

1989 Kawaski KX125 jetting specifications:

OEM jetting
Main 155
Pilot 52
Needle R2067N
Clip 4th
Air Screw 1.5 turns out

Boyesen RAD jetting
Main 1-3 sizes smaller
Pilot STD
Needle STD
Clip 3rd
Air Screw 1.5 turns out

Pro circuit recommended jetting
Main Jet 155
Pilot Jet 58
Needle STD
Clip 3rd
Air Screw 1.5 out

FMF recommended jetting
Main Jet 148
Pilot Jet 62
Needle STD
Clip 3rd
Air Screw 1.5 out

Anyone have old MXA/Dirt Bike mags with a detailed review of the 89 KX125? They used to have recommended jetting included with their articles.

What's the color code for the green powdercoat you used?

I might have some MXA on the bike, I will dig around.

Don't have the code handy. I used Powder Coat Customs in Lilburn GA. They knew exactly what color to use when I brought my frame in.

When I rebuilt my 96 YZ125 I put in boyesen power reeds the only other mod was an fmf fatty which was already on the bike. I put a 340 main back in previously had a 330 (350 is stock). I set the clip position to 3 (stock). Bike ran great except when I give her 3/4 to full throttle down the straight bike was acting up. Ditched the 340 and put back in the 330 fixed the top end issue runs clean. My bike is still rich down low I can hear some sputtering going to try moving up 1 or 2 clip positions. My pilot seems to be fine I'm already one step down on that also (50 from a 55(STK).

I've never jetted any type of race gas though just the highest pump octane I can find around here (93) mixed at 32:1 w/ Castor 927.

Did the Boyesen RAD valve recommend what to do with the jetting?

Yeah, I posted it right above (in my quoted text above your reply).. they say to drop 1-3 sizes on the main and keep everything else standard spec (also above). I'm about to pull the main to see what I changed it to (didn't write it down).

Current jetting:

Main: 150
Pilot: 52 (stock)
Clip: 3rd (stock)

Also noticed that the fuel in the bowl was very dark - it's been hanging out in the gas tank for about a month. Gonna dump what's left in the tank and race can and mix fresh at 32:1 before making any jetting changes.

Got some fresh gas mixed up. Moved clip to 4th position and took for a short ride around the yard.. bike barks now. Still a smidge smokey so I'm not spot on with jetting just yet.

I have same bike and race it a lot. The rad valve and stock exhaust are a bad combination from my experience. If you have trouble getting it running clean try swapping to the stock reed valve or get yourself a better pipe/silencer.
ibpassngas, what pipe do you run on your 89 125? I didn't like performance of the OEM pipe, so I swapped to a PC pipe - better.

keep in mind those specs you posted are meant to be run on pump gas or a mix of pump/race. PC does spec there specs with full race but I have always found their setting to be too rich in my experience. With running straight 110 which has a lighter specific gravity than pump, I've always had to jet mine a tad leaner from bottom to 3/4.

Now as far as the bike blowing smoke at WOT, you might have a blown right side crank seal. I've seen them no seat properly, get cut when pressing crank through, or even a small piece of dirt tearing things up. Keep an eye on your trans fluid level, it will be a tell tale sign if your engine is sucking oil past the crank seal.

I dropped main to a 148 today but haven't had time to ride it since. The transmission fluid was a smidge low before I dumped it last time, so if I still have WOT smoke.. I think I have my answer. Sad

I would do a couple more oil changes, measure what you're putting in and getting out each time. As far as it being too rich up top, just make sure you're not confusing that for a blown seal.

If it's running rough from 1/4 to 1/2, lower your needle, ala raise the clip to lean the mixture out.

I run an FMF pipe, PC silencer and the RAD valve. Motor is stock. The bike runs great with this setup. I would expect the PC pipe to be just as good. I wish FMF still offered this pipe, I'd purchase a couple more. I have a second bike completely stock I am planning on going through to get race ready. I will probably go with a Dynoport setup if FMF won't make me a pipe.
