I have a 1988 CR250 the clutch basket that is trashed and I am trying to find out what other possible years will work in the '88 engine.
1988 clutch basket is part number 22100-KZ3-000, this lists for a 1988/89 CR. This clutch is a 7 disc set up.
When I bought the bike, it was a complete roach and the clutch was a different year and was an 8 disc set up. That makes the set up from a 1990 onward.
From my research, from 1984 through 2000 ALL Honda CR's had the first 5 digits as 22100.
The 1990/91 clutch is part number 22100-KZ3-700
1992 CR OLD part number is 22100-KZ3-JZ0 (new part number is 22100-KSK-670) and it shows with cross reference that it should fits all years between 1992 through 2000!
So my question is, will a 8 plate clutch for example from a 1996 work in a 1988 CR250?
Has anybody ever done this swap and have any experience?

You can buy a new Mitaka one here or should be able to get the same Stateside.
As you can see it says it fits 86-91 CR250's.
Good luck.

I've been sorting this out also and I certainly don't claim to be a CR clutch expert. I do have a 86 and 90 motor apart right now. All of them are pretty notched up and after I decided to use the 90 bottom end it wasn't a concern as all the parts are sync but when I was still thinking the 86 bottom end I compared and measured all these baskets and the only difference I can see is that the 86 was about 6.5mm shorter (makes sense as it's one plate less). I'm not a betting man but I bet the two piece clutch cover gives that much more room to accommodate the taller stack height.
The gears are all the same as far as I can tell and I was either going to add the rest of the modern (90) parts to the 86 motor or have the difference machined off the pro x basket whichever was nessarry.
I'd bet Honda just added the stack height and looks like they beefed up the bottom of the basket a bit as you can see in the pics.

As far as I know the only difference is the 1992-up have a different pressure plate and that may be why they list it differently. We have never had a problem with the basket not fitting on the 90-91 models.

Comments: Hello. I am looking to replace the clutch on my 1991 Honda CR250R. I was looking at your baskets and competitors. I found that you list your basket PN. 321-35-01004 for the 1990 through 2007 CR250R. On websites other than your own that part number is listed for 1992 through 2007. Your competitors list their baskets and hubs for 1992 through 2007. Is the 1990 and 1991 Honda clutch hub, basket and pressure plate different from the 1992 through 2007. All brand friction disks and clutch plates list for 1990 through 2007. Basically, can you confirm your clutch basket fits the 90' and 91 engine. your assistance in clarification would be appreciated. Thanks. Greg
I hope that helps some. As for the differences between the different clutch covers and the depth for the clutches. I have several of these engines and parts. The 88' clutch cover is just as deep as the 90/91'. You can fit the extra disk clutch in the older 88'/89' engine. You must also have the longer push rod and lifter to make it work.
