That is an iconic bike with some cool updates. There's been a super-low hour one on CL here in the Houston area for a while (the crazy high asking price is killing the lister):

http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/4957413973.html

If I could only have 4 bikes, I'd have my '87, my '93, my Maico and an '08 or '07 CR450. Heck if I was rich, I'd have at least 4 '87 CR250s. Good luck on your sale and tip of the hat to your project.

Is the listing in Houston actually a good listing ? The guys has that bike listed for different amounts every week it seems.

Wow, I was checking that one out listed on Craigslist and I have one here at my shop I took apart that i got as far as powercoating the frame that I'll sell in pieces (you put it back together…I have all the parts, plus a lot of new parts) for $1600.00. I too have a 265 in my 98 RM (Eric Gorr didn't do the motor), but smooth is not a word I can use with mine, rather the word abrupt hit comes to mind. The fast way around the track is to short shift it (a lot less work…beats the heck out of riding it on the pipe as it will wear your arms out in short order).

Yeah, for those of us of a certain age, it's tough to value the '87 CR250 -- maybe I'm getting too old, but man, the entire '87 (and '86 also) Honda line-up is so, SO iconic.

Honda was just a complete steamroller back in those days. They won *everything*, Ricky Johnson was the fastest man in the world, Soichiro could have put a trained chimp on an HRC bike and Honda still would have gotten podium finishes.

And the '87 CR250 is so close to perfect, just the complete representation of how Honda was doing everything so right -- I can't honestly think of what I'd sell my own '87 for.

Houston is not far from were I live, and have been surprised at the up and down pricing of that CL '87. But on the other hand, for the right person, ANY good '87 is a great piece of history -- as always, it just depends on how much value that person puts on acquiring the bike.

Super machine! I bought a new 1989 CR250R Honda to race and after sending the new upside down forks off a couple of times...FAIL. I then found a set of 1997 CR250 forks @ the O.G. Moose racing shop in Littleton CO, that my pal Joe S. Set me up with bolted them up and life was good. The 1997 CR250 is still a great motocross bike in 2015

Max, thanks the bike is set up with all the go fast stuff.

Last year at Budds Creek I broke my YZ250 and had to run the CR in modern, as they were clicking in their Hole Shot devices one said we should give you an advantage, I laughed and pointed at their starting devices gate dropped got the hole shot almost won the race took second. These bike can run at any modern event and win.
If it doesn't sell no problem I'll just have to run anouther class

Congrats on the sell.

If anyone else is interested, my '87 CR250 is for sale.

Wolfy/Barkhard, or anyone else who has restored an 87 CR250. I would like any input you have as I just picked one up.

Is it true I can take the hubs off an '89 or later to save weight?

Can I bolt some Yamaha Ti footpads on it like I used on my '89 CR125? I don't have the bike in front of me to look.

Does anyone see a benefit of running a Vforce over stock?

The bike has a new PWK airstryker 38mm carb. Has anyone run one of these on their 87?

Any other suggestions?

How about gearing? Go with stock gearing?

The yamaha pegs will work and yes on the v force reed.

I wouldn't waste time on the weight savings, practice your riding skills, bike is more than capable. I do like the V force reed blocks on Honda,s I also run air Stryker carbs, needle jet will need adj. never really like the needle that come with the carb. Gearing depends on the track, can go as much as 2 tooth for hilly courses. Run Yamaha pegs on most of my hondas or DRC 5mm low

2lbs savings is a no brainer since I'll be building new wheels from scratch. It's either I get some 87 hubs or 89 hubs to start with and hopefully save weight with hubs/spoke count in the process. I just need confirmation the 89 or newer hubs will bolt directly on. I've read elsewhere it works, but hoping someone here can confirm who's done it on their 87.

I'll get some yamaha pegs ordered and hopefully someone will chime in on the hubs.
