I've scoured the forum but haven't been able to get an answer. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

I couldn't find one either for my '86, so I had my welding buddy make one up for me....

I actually saw your bike with that skid plate during my search. Trying not to weld anything to the frame but may not have a choice. Thanks for posting

You are welcome. I also went with the welded version to help strengthen the frame itself. I am surprised that someone like Phil Denton Engineering hasn’t developed a modern removable aluminum unit like you can get for modern bikes. I would think there would be a decent market for them. Let me know if you find anything, and good luck!

I made a weld on skid plate for my KX. The frame is so frail on that bike I wanted the strength. I made 1 3/4" holes to lighten it and let out water. I pack the space between. the engine and plate with foam to keep mud out.
The home Depot sells or sold this foam gutter guard which I cut up to fit. It's cheap and works great. After a muddy practice I'm glad I made the effort

I bought one for my ‘89 from ricochet off-road. Maybe look them up or give them a call to see if it will fit. It mounts with two u bolts that go over the frame rails so it might work on the 86.

thanks for the replys. Gonna give ricochet a holler. Hope the frame isn't too different from the '86 to '89?

So...I have a skid plate on the way from Ricochet. It's for an '89 and they weren't sure if it'll fit my '86. If it doesn't, hopefully I can modify it a bit to make it work. I'll keep you all posted

LOL! From the man himself! Well then Stevie....if you already have the skid plates on your "to do" list, might as well add the aluminum frame guards for them too!!

That's funny, I just chopped something like that off my 1992 CR500R frame in order to go with something a little more aesthetically pleasing:

Thanks. Yeah, well the skidplate came in a box of part I had. It must have been for a CR frame around the year of this bike that I'm working on (1992 CR500) because it fit so well. But it was missing all the mounting system so I came up with the way to mount it. Basically bought bolts, collars and welded them to the frame.

I wanted to use this aluminum plate because (1) its lighter than the steel one that was on the frame (2) it looks much nicer (3) its removable now and (4) it doesn't cover those triangulated sections in the rear, so it shouldn't trap dirt/mud as bad.

Hey there mxracer106. Did you paint or powder coat your frame?

Thanks Pirate421. I ordered this skid plate from Ricochet Offroad. The application is for an '89 CR 250 but it's a perfect fit on my '86 CR 250. Thank you so much for the lead...it worked out!!

I race this bike, so I just painted it with Color Rite Flash Red and Clear Coat. Cheaper and simple to touch up if needed.

Do you feel the color is correct for the year?

Yes, it is almost a perfect match to the original.
