1981 yz125 tank cover

I got my hands on a vintage tank cover. It’s stamped yz125 on the back side in red. It doesn’t say what years it fits but it fits like it should on my 1981. What was the actual purpose of one of these. They certainly don’t look very good so I assume it had another purpose. Very cool old school accessory either way.

I just noticed it's for a 250. It looked small in package. I have one for an 80cc somewhere.

Is the 250 tank that much bigger? Wonder if it would fit a 125. I know the 465 is definitely a bigger tank. Sure would love to have that on one of my 125’s.

I believe the 250 and 465 used same tank.

What’s your opinion on it fitting a 125 even halfway descent? Are you willing to sell it?

A site for reproduction tanks says the 250 tank fits the 465 but is less fuel capacity.

I finally found a 1981 tank cover. I took my chances on it because there’s nothing stamped on the back to indicate bike size. After receiving it, appears to be for a 250 because it is slightly to big for my 125. When you snap the straps tight under the tank it pulls the logo underneath because it’s about an inch to big that way. Its not pulled tight underneath in the pictures. It’s not in as great of shape as I was hoping for but the price was right to gamble on it. Looks good just sitting on top. My question is........is there a big size difference in the 125 and 250/465 tanks? They look pretty much the same when you just look at pictures.

The YZ465 had the biggest tank. The petcock is also on the right side unlike yours on the left. 2.3 gallons is what I remember. 250 was right around 2 gallons.
