I just picked one up and plan on building an ultra-light racer over the winter(as soon as all the RM's are done) and as internet savvy as I am ,I cant find ANYWHERE the listed dry weight/race weight of an original all stock 80 YZ250G. I know I could just weigh the one I have,(which I will) but id like to know exactly what they were advertised at and/or actual. I figured one of you guys may have an original propaganda sheet ,perhaps....

Try connecting with Rob Boucher. That guy has the mother of all light weight 1980 YZ250s, and used to post here often. You can also find him on Mark's Vintage Swapmeet I would imagine.

Barkhard, yep I actually did talk to Rob several times about his YZ, never posed that question ,though we both had most of the same ideas about the procedures and items to lose 15lbs-ish. But I mentioned I bought a lathe and a mini-mill and had a old friend that's a master machinist to help me fab some of my pieces and the conversations started to get a bit "strained",lol. So that being said, Im not comfortable contacting him about too much at all. I find it very odd that I just cant find that info anywhere online. You can find just about EVERYTHING on the web.....except that apparently.

Project racer---you are "da man"!!! That's exactly what I was looking for !! Thanks for the help.. And yes, I remember my 250G being very fast even in stock trim. I took a bone stock G to the 79 winter-ama Florida series (actually put it together in the trailer during our 1,000 mile drive to the first round) pulled the holeshot in the first moto against a lot of factory guys. Of course, I rapidly faded like an old newspaper lol.......but the bike WAS fast. Thanks again

My 81 is a slug and feels likebit weighs a ton. Hopefully a PVL ignition and a few motor mods will wake it up.

Newmann, my 80 seems like a rocketship. In fact ,embarrassingly enough, I almost looped it coming out of the first corner I hit ,lol. My C2 doesn't hit or hook up like that bike. Im riding both this weekend so ill get a better feel for them both.

Absolutely sounds like Rob Boucher lol. He stomped around here in numerous posts telling everyone that their machine work sucked and his ruled lol. He did nice work though, credit where it's due.

Rob does beautiful work, no doubt. I never understood his need to berate everybody else's work though. I once told him he needed to machine a special chamber to allow him to smell his own farts lol.

I would think your bike will rip with the ignition. I had an 81 in 82. Thought it was fast. Got good starts only the rear suspension was horrific
Is tbe flywheel rotor on the pvl much lighter than the stock part?

Fookyoo!

Yes, remove all steel hardware, etc

I saved about 1 lb with this homemade all aluminum silencer

No more melted side panels(changed angle of pipe bend)

.03 wall, material thickness

I'm hoping he'll mentor me some day. You can learn a lot from a guy like that. Reminds me of my shop neighbor everything he works on comes out primo, taught me lots over the past few years. Cool

Thanks guys!
That's my free hand welding( not resting my hand's on anything) tig welding, not wearing gloves. about 25 amps,
so i do not smoke though base material. Old oxy/acetylene habits plus a few beers while working on parts does not
help
I did just purchase a tig finger, and when i wear gloves i can lay down a nice bead , even in a circle

A few more pics of silencer parts
The Answer silencer had a poor fit(melted side panel), but its length improved power, so i added another .5
bike runs great.
2.5 od tubing, answer 2.5 od tubing also
stock 2.75

I once used a dremel to fashion a blank of aluminum into a pipe hanger for my 97 rm250. I felt like some kind of machinist hero lol.
