I have a 1980 YZ125 but no extra cage. If I find one I will let you know.

If you can not come up with a used one, go to your Yamaha dealer and have them put it out on the find a part request system. My local dealer is on the Nation wide Yamaha find a part system . If another Yamaha dealer has the part(s) and monitors the system, they will usually contact your local dealer , you prepay for the parts, and they are shipped to your dealer.

But not this part.

I think I found one in Europe.
A few guys in the know on this bike tell me they are damn near impossible to find.

Is the 1981 YZ125 airbox the same?

Try and find a swingarm bolt and nut for one at your friendly neighborhood dealer?

You can run the 1981 complete air box as an upgrade.

However you can't just switch out the cages.

The 1980-81 IT175 uses the same one.

Mosher you are correct. That's the only way I was able to find one.

Motoduro in Europe has some listed for the 80-81 IT and sold me 2 for $13 each and shipped them for 7.

Nice people.

If your building a race bike I never use the stock cage and boot it's a poor design and sucks dirt.
Drill out the rivets holding the assembly to the air box discard then order a Twin air filter for a 1979-80 Honda cr 125 it is a full sized filter assembly with a air boot molded to the front that can be trimmed to fit.Just slide in the box and clamp to the rear of the carb this will do away the crappy cage and dirt sucking poor seal around the air box boot and flows way more air than the stock junk.

I use this on all RM's too from 76-80

Twin air makes one for the 78-80 cr 250 that will work on the big bikes.

Any problem with supporting the carb from the back side like the stock setup did?

I'm gonna try this since I am on my third cylinder!!

What about creating more holes in the box for more air?

Woody’s YZ125G – Thunder from Down Under

Here is an amazing restoration from Woody in Australia. As Woody worked on the restoration, he asked many questions and his enthusiasm was contagious. But as the results show, the bike turned out fabulously.
Woody set up a site with lot’s of photos displaying his machine as he worked on it and shared his journey with his friends. The link is below.

I have read that blog..lots if good info..it actually got me started on this bike

But I think I remember reading somewhere that people were cutting holes in the airbox to get more air..

Or was that on an old rm...

I'm getting old!

Nope, not just the RMs. I drilled holes in my airbox as most did back then. It did make a big improvement...
