Valving, springs, internal parts, reservoir on the 465 shock, maybe length. What are you trying to do?

The 80 IT was a 425 and a cousin to the 79 YZ 400. 81 was a white IT 465. Big difference between the 425 setup and the 465.

Buddy has a 1980 yz 125 and wants the heavier duty shock. He got one on ebay but the part # says its to a 81 IT465, Whats the differences from a yz 465 shock and an IT and what can be done with the IT shock ? can you revalve it to make it similar to a YZ ? Or can the 125 shock be revalved to a heavier rider?

Most of the difference between the IT and the YZ will be the shock length but Yamaha typically did this with an internal spacer but the shocks are similar.

This is old school technology so you can bring it up to more modern specs. These shocks benefit from higher spring rates, updated seal heads and a modern valve with shims. Racetech is a great DIY resource for information and parts. Other companies like Noleen and Sage racing can do it for you.
