I'm not sure why they did that, but Brad also ran the #1 at Carlsbad in '81.

Good Question . . .

In both cases, the current world champions were not racing those USGP's so there was the opportunity for the promoter to assign numbers to their country's top racers to help promote the GP and attract a bigger American crowd turnout.

250 Champion Hakan Carlqvist moved up to the 500's in 1980 so #1 was open at the 250 USGP for Howerton

500 Champ Graham Noyce was hurt before the 1980 USGP so Lackey got to be #1 as the top American.

somebody told me lackey was leading the points into carlsbad.and since noyce#1 was not racing ,lackey got the 1?and same person said howerton got the 1 at dilla because carlqust moved up to 500 and howerton won dilla in 79 venue? but jobe was points leader at dilla .confusing.

I am to believe that the numbers were awarded per GP. The previous years results would dictate what the riders donned.
