Don't think that is a 1979 maico. The 1979 had a metal tank and frame extension over the rear fender. Yours looks like 1980.
Look for some pictures of Danny Chandler riding a Maico. He rode 1979 Maicos.

Ok Too see if you figure this out. I worked for a small Maico shop, back at the last of the AW's and just when the 1st Magnums came out. We had a AW125 (or atleast it had the AW style tank & decal) but only see a Magnum 125? Did they leave out the earlier 125's?

Did it look like this? I believe this is a 1977 AW125, but I have not seen any old ad's that included the AW125 in them. Not sure why.

I like the little Maicos, maybe because they were so rare.

There was never a Magnum 125. 250 400 and 450's were it. First year was the Magnum in 1978. with ten inches of travel and no rear fender loop and very few 450s made. 79 was the Magnum II with the rear fender loop and eleven inches of travel and lots of 450s and fewer 400s. Damn FTE looks like I was wrong then. Never ever saw a 125 Magnum.

Only Maico 125s I knew in the states were like in '71 or 2...and think those were rare to get here then.

That left sidecase is different from other Mags..I had a '79 250 Mag II and it's different.

Not that it matters. Cool stuff.

The 125's were always rotary valved. The bike copped Maico's roadrace 125. Definitely not moto tuned. Still cool little scoots; sort of like the early CZ 125's. Slow as snails, but neat.

We preped a AW style 1977 125 for the Maico dealer new model show, I think in 1977 at MotoMeister. We did take it out to Escape Country afterwards and Greg Barrett tried it out, he said it had a road racing style power band (no low end or midrange)but it also had a as he called it a European gear box (notchy), if I recall someone did pretty good with it in the mid-west (Illinois) but thats what the USA distributor told everyone.

You need to look up the "Maico Motorcycles" forum on Yahoo groups

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/MAICOMOTORCYCLES/

Also these other sites.

http://www.maicoland.com/

http://www.maicoonly.com/

I happen to have a spare set of front forks for a 80' Maico, which is what you have.

I also have some spare transmission parts too!

Let me know what you need & I can find it for you!

Gearboxes were really fragile on all the Maico 125's.

They were all really heavy too, because they just used the same frame, suspension and front wheels as the 250 & open bikes.

Thats a 78, ( no rear frame loop) , I dont think they brought any here in 79, we had a 78 demo hanging around at H&H back then and everyone rode it some, I did a hare scrambles on it and it was kinda ok, the road race derived rotary valve motor wasnt really the best for mx but if you got it revvin it eventually got going ok...the shift mechanism was fragile and finicky as well. Indy_maico is correct in his assesment of the weight factor also.

I rode one of the maico 125's a couple of times in 1979. It was at the home of Joe Grassi if any one from GA. remembers him. It may have been the same bike motogeeze is refering to . Joe rode out of H&H at the time. In '79 I was racing a husky 125 which was also slow by any standard. It also used the 250-390 frame and cases like the maico. Getting off a slow bike like the husky should have made anything feel fast, not so with the maico. I don't remember it being heavy. I do remember how well it handled and cornered compaired to my husky. good brakes too. That maico 125 had no bottom end power, it may have some top end but I always ran out of straightaway before I found it.
That maico 125 was a pretty bike . I always loved the red color and every thing looked like it was in the right place. Very good lines as the auto guys say.

I have ridden all the Maicos. straight line stability is great power is not up to par with say a CR500 but its OK more for a rough track bike built for avoiding the killer whoops or slicing under a rought turn. Just something to think about?

The 81 490 did me well last weekend at the AHRMA Vintage National at ACP....won the 40+, 50+ and Ultima Expert classes. Back to back motos, too! That bike was awesome....

In fact, I think I'll ride it at the AZ OT's International in a few weeks....

The power of the 81' Maico 490's can be adjusted to your liking very easily, just with the timing, pipe & a few other little tricks!

The power can also be adjusted to your liking by the position of your right wrist....
