Well since you want to race in 2019 and you want a big bore, and 77 big bores can be found at the moment and none are likely to turn up soon, why don't you look for a different year? At least if you buy a different year, you can still race. Most clubs let non rear link 1980 bikes race in the 1975 thru 1979/1980 class including AHRMA.

Here's two 79's that were posted within the last few days and one has fox shocks.

How are the ‘78/79 models compared to the 77’s? Never rode a 78/9

I've had both models of 400 (plus a 76). They are pretty similar sharing most engine internals. The 78/79 has slimmer cases, came stock with electronic ignition and has the cs sprocket in closer proximity to the swingarm pivot eliminating chain tensioner hassles. 78/79 also came with an up pipe vs the downpipe on the 77. The rear of the 78/79 might have had a little more travel than the 77 but I think the forks were the same. Ergo wise the 77 still feels like an 'old school' Maico with the coffin tank and older style seat. The 78/79 had the rounded tank and some purists don't like it as much. In 78 they deleted the rear fender loop and mounted the fender to the seat base. In 79 they went back to the loop so its easy to tell a 78 from a 79 at a glance. Power wise they are pretty comparable so its really a matter of preference.

great info.

one other consideration is that you could get a 400 or a 440. the bigger 440 is not necessarily going to get you around the track faster. it depends on the track and your riding style etc. the only maicos i have ever ridden were a 74 501 and a 74.5 gp 400. i raced the 400 in ahrma and won the open cc expert open age class and open cc over 40 expert class the same year on it. it was an incredible bike...except for the clutch, and there is no way the 501 would have been a better engine but that's a completely different deal than a 400 vs a 440.

one other thing to consider is that all these old bikes are getting extremely hard to find, so you might just get a newer one if you can race the same class then continue to look for a 77 if you just have to have one then buy that if you find one and sell the newer one.

i love the coffin tank look, and that's the only thing i wish they would have kept on the newer ones.

Agree 100% on the coffin tank look. I'd have both of those bikes out at a practice day at a local track and modern bike guys would walk right past the 78 and ask me about my 77. It just has more of that old world euro cobbiness to it. I've never ridden a 440 but read that some of the factory riders back in the day liked the 400 better, especially for hardpacked tracks because the power band was easier to manage. I've also had Maico 250s- they don't get a lot of love compared to the open bikes but I always thought they were great bikes and super easy to ride.

Have a 77 440 goin to be sellin when weather gets a little warmer . nice original cond. has up pipe and mikuni on it already . metzlers and hd progressive shocks . Hate to sell ,just getting rid of all my bikes..

I am building a 1980 Mega 1 440.

I've been sitting on the forks and frame for about 20 years. I have some old wheels that I need to rebuild, and all the plastic. I still need some bits and pieces that I think are pretty common items, hopefully no show-stoppers!

I had been searching for a deal on an engine. Just acquired one that I need to go through and freshen up.
