So the bike is stripped down to the frame . My brother knew a body guy who offered to paint it when I visited SC a month or so ago. It had a few dings in the tank that he repaired . He used urethane and a clear coat. So what's the problem?

First, I decided to use a red that matched the plastic offered by VMX. It is not Tahitian red. So be advised the VMX plastic for the Tahitian red years does not match. It's not bad but I am a bit of a purist so I want the factory color. Plus it has to be repainted anyway. I wanted one of these badly as a teen. I will refurbish my current plastic or have the painter use paint for plastic for the new VMX stuff. I know. Don't paint MX bikes plastics, but the bike will probably never be ridden. It is mostly for me to collect and take to a motorcycle show here and there. And if it doesn't hold up, I will pay for it to be done again. I had the lower plastic fairing on my CBR1000 painted white a few years ago. It's holding up great. No issues at all.

Second, It has to be redone anyway. the guy obviously was mostly drunk when he did the job. The workmanship is extremely shoddy. The tank finish is unacceptable along with the rest of it. I know very little about painting and could have done a better job than this. . Also not sure I like the super shiny clear coat. I was pissed. I refused to let him try to correct the problem. Plus I was out of time.

I have been online most of the afternoon off and on and can't get a consensus on what to do. I am having a professional do the job. So no rattle can advice please. I have a painter and also a powder coat guy. What is recommended procedure for repainting MX bikes? . I ask this bc the painter probably doesn't know himself. I'm leaning toward painting especially since I have to deal with the plastic issue. Single stage ? Base and clear coat? Do you clear coat the tank and frame, or just the tank? Or no separate clear coat? I'm looking for close to factory appearance. I don't remember my 1976 xr75 being super shiny.

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately , the guy that could give you ALL the correct answers concerning paint (particularly on early Elsies) is Newmann ,and he is either still on a timeout, or maybe a self-imposed sabbatical ? Joe, if you're out there, get this guy on the right path.

Other than that---I got nothin'

Powder coat to match VMX plastic is RAL 3020. Yes, the VMX plastic is a slightly darker red then Tahitian red but looks pretty damn good.

Clear coat gives that over restored plasticky look. Use single stage urethane.

Also, if you want the factory looking finish on the frame it should be about an 850-85% gloss.

The little bit I know is a good guy with the experience CAN do an awesome paint job on plastic, especially for a show bike. When it comes to powder verses paint, you will great great arguments on both. I tend to go with whatever is most accessible.

Wet 2K is what the factory used?
If you not going to race it, no need for powder coat.
And its not fun to remove if you are not satisfied..
