This is the bike Keith rode in Schoolboy Amateur Nationals that Steve Ellis built at Dynamic Cycle in Troy, Michigan. The year was 1981. I am the pictured rider. I was loaned this bike for the area qualifier for the AMA Amateur National held at Red Bud that year while mine was being built.

Not a bored out 80.. Was built off a 1981 YZ 125 chassis like yours was. 100 cc cylinder with a water jacket fabbed around the cylinder.

Heres another pic. Gotta love the gas cap laying in the dirt. Should have fired the mechanic I guess. Sweet doubled up milk crate bike stand as well. LOL

I remember a guy that always wore orange gear that raced the 100 exp class back around 81-82...I think his name was Jerry Anchor. He won just about every time I watched the 100cc class...but there were very few 100's at that time. Still he was fast.

I raced 100 expert, and didn't race 100's after 81. turned pro in 82.

Seeing the JT makes me think of a kid back around 73,74 maybe as far as 72 racing around Louisiana (I saw him at Waggaman LA. alot if anyone remembers that track) with JT on his number plate on I think a Kawasaki KE 100 very tricked out and won almost everytime I saw him race, I thnk his name was John Talyor. but I not sure, I may be mixing tha up with Ron Dupry's Kawasaki 100 that he raced alot at Waggaman. I don't know memory is pretty cloudy, that was long ago,

Greg Toyama moved to Australia (Adelaide) in the early 80's. I had some great races with him locally in South Australia on 125's and 250's up until about '83 when he stopped riding to concentrate on a real estate career. I haven't seen him for years, apparently he's back in California. Great guy.
Just go hit a Saturday night SX at Anaheim Stadium, make your trek to the Big Jumbotron up top and there is a sweet little bar area...you'll find Greg Toyama with a bunch of Old School Mxer's having a beer, seen him last 2 years in a row...serious he hasn't aged !!

Sondy- I think I will go find Gregg Toyama at the Anaheim SX next year. It was great seeing Stu and you at the Trans-Cal finale.

Punky Sites was very fast on a 100 81-82 Dist 17. Breck Powers(mini rider) borrowed a 100 to qualify for LL's. He was winning LL's on a borrowed bike and bent the shifter all the way back and I think he still ended up 6th.

socalhodaka-- The CALVMX vintage race at Perris was really alot of fun! Here you are with your Hodaka as one of your competitors checks things out.

The 100 class is back and here's the start of the first moto. This class will no doubt keep growing and growing.

514 is Chris Parker on a JWR-Jeff Ward-racing mini elsi. This guy lived up the street from me in Villa Park and also rode for Harry's Cycle in Orange.

Do you have any photos of Brian Champion from back in the day? Or do you know where I can get any? I'm his fiance and would like to give him something from his "glory days" as a gift.

The Dynamic TD-100 (AMA forced us to change the name from Yamaha) was conceived and built over the winter of 1980, debut was in spring of 81. We used a complete 81 YZ125 water cooler and "grafted" the 100 cylinder and head onto it. A bit of of machining necessary, as they had a different crank centerline, rod length, case deck height and cylinder/case bolt pattern. If you lined up 10 of the top Yamaha engineers in 80/81 and asked if you could put a 100 cylinder on a 125, all would say no. Not just no, but "hell no". But I said yes, it had to be done. The idea came after the 1980 Yamaha dealer meeting where they showed the new 81 YZ-100. It was SMALL, lower, had tiny forks and poor rear suspension. It was a halfway bike between the 125 and 80. So I went to work figuring out how to legally make a 125 into a 100. Sleeving was illegal in AMA racing, so a cylinder swap was the only option. 1st goal was to just make the cylinder work, water cooling was secondary but quickly became the norm. For water cooling I machined the fins down, welded a water jacket on, plumbed it like stock to the water inlet pipe and outlet hose and cut the 100 head fins to the new smaller size. The 125 pipe tuning was all wrong so I cut/welded the 100 pipe (normally exited on the left side) to fit on the right. Later we had some custom ones made. AMA tried to ban it, Ron Lechein tried to beat it (could not) and it won a ton of races and championships in 1981. I think we built about 20 of them. Yamaha visited to figure out what the hell we had done, just stood there and scratched their heads! Lechein was virtually a factory rider then, and as part of promoting the production bikes, he could not get Yamaha to make him one so he was forced to ride the small, ill handling 81 YZ-100. His dad was pissed, and we just laughed. Overall it was an amazing bike that with porting, a Lectron carb and other tricks it would out drag race the stock 125 which was quite good that year. Those were fun times.

And don't forget Danny Walsh. He was ranked # 3 in the state when he was 14 . I remember him well because he was me. When the Suzuki contenders came out me and Tracy parsons had the first two in the state. I could not beat Tracy but know body else could catch me as well. Of course all brands kept getting better. I started racing the pro 100 class shortly shortly after I got my contender . Fun times and a lot of hard work put into it not to mention all my money
