I did my first dual sport ride yesterday, which this year was a benefit ride in our son's honor who passed in December. I've been riding dirt bikes for 25 years or so, but never did any adventure stuff. I have a motocross track at my house, so I ride fairly often. But, I also envied enjoyed the longer ride with on/off road sections. I can get a good deal on the KTM through the shop that sponsored our son, so just want to get some opinions on the bike as 1st adventure bike. Any feed back is appreciated

Here's his vid where he explains the bikes intended customer/use...

Personally, it's limited by it's price(for an intro bike it seems like a lot of $ to me) & it's suspension that's meant for beginners. If you've got $ to spend on mods? It may be a good thing.

Go FE250 or EXC350 so you can stay with a bike for several seasons

Yamaha T7 or KTM790/890. Plenty of power for the street, still plenty capable of getting into things much worse than a dirt road.

I haven't ridden the latest 690/701 but the first few years of them weren't anything special IMO. You could get a modded out KLR650 that was just as capable and still have money in the bank and a more reliable bike. (Which is what I did, I still miss that pig)

If you want something "weird" grab an AJP PR7. Its the closest thing you'll get to a rally bike for $10k.

I was looking at the 390 but ended up on the 890. Not much more weight and way more HP. Plus the 890 is made in Austria (for now) where as the 390 is made in India. If you haven't looked at the middle weight bikes give them a look before buying the 390.

390 adv is an absolute steaming pile... it's a crotch rocket.... with crap power, wonky as F powerband.... you can't stand up on it... stock rear is worthless..... the tc is irritating.... only upside is the stock gauge cluster.... otherwise.... it's a poor riding, wonky powerbanded, crotch rocket in wanna be adv form....
