Hoping to get some advice from people who have been in a similar situation. I've always ridden a mix of trails and tracks, and have only ever ridden/owned MX bikes. I have recently decided my track days are done and want to only ride trails and in a non-competitive way. Additionally, my kids have started to show an interest in riding and trying to ride around slowly with them can be a challenge on a 250F
The KLX300R has piqued my interest, it seems like the perfect bike for the type of riding that I want to do (not to mention the friendly price tag), but my biggest concern is the lack of power/speed.
Has anyone on here gone from riding MX bikes to trail-specific bikes, and if so, how was the change for you?

Both of those are the best of everything, BUT I wanted something affordable and fun to dual sport with, do some light trail riding after riding out from the house.
I was able to get hold of a 2021 CRF300 Rally and Al259 is right…its kinda heavy, kinda under powered and the suspension is under sprung and under dampened!
I dropped the $240 or so to install the Race Tech spring kit front & rear, and installed a set of folding mirrors.
I just ride out from the house, fold the mirrors down and hit the trail and I have a flippin’ BLAST!
I just remind myself that today is just about fun and low key ride, and that if I wanna try to haul-ass, go to the trouble to get the 250 prepped, loaded, drive out to the trail, gear up and go for a performance ride, otherwise, just enjoy the bike and a low key ride for a change!
The 300 Rally is a crap ton of fun, I can ride from the house, do a trail loop then ride for lunch or whatever mood strikes! And the 80+ MPG is flippin’ great with current ridiculous fuel price situation!
I’d encourage you to go ahead and get that KLX300, it IS gonna be a big change from the level of performance you’re used to, BUT if you able to just ride with the mindset that it’s strictly for fun, I don’t think you’ll be sorry! The 300’s are a fun affordable way to stay on the trail without a 2nd mortgage! Have fun! 😎👍
