I'm a Baja fool and Off-Roader that still gets plenty of MX track time.
I get the feeling that there are a lot of guys like me: I'm 53. Still get about 4-5K off-road miles and 50-60 track-days a year.
What I want to know is...how many of us are there?
Us = the over 30 person that calls Moto their sport and still does off-road and/or track riding on a somewhat regular basis (I work in the industry and some of those off-road miles are tedious "escort or trail-guide" miles...but, I still love ALL OF IT!)
You don't need to have a ton of miles or laps...I'm just looking for those of you folks do these things anywhere from 8-10 times a year and up...so...
What's your story?
Like I said, I don't care if you get a ton of miles or laps...it ain't a contest.
Just want to hear from those of us that're still doing both.
I'm asking because I'm looking into a few bike projects (around here) that represent "us". Bikes that can do it all....and/or bike that can go to the track AND a hare-scramble/GNCC/Enduro. I mean NICE bikes that make you proud in both environments.
I'm talking "Ultimate Vet-Bike".

After a recent resurgence into the sport, I purchased a new 2015 Ktm250xc and lemme tell ya, I been hitting it.
I do some occasional hare scrambles , usually get on the top of the box or at least on the box. Love pulling these holeshots , thank you e start.
We do a decent amount of trail miles at least every other weekend. I've actually been holding a few training sessions in the woods for a few new guys. You know just the basics, bike setup , body positioning, log crossing, natural obstacle jumps.
I also did the Texas lone star series and night series at swan mx in Tyler Texas this year. I entered some 450 classes and those young guys give you the dumb look when you line up on a cross country bike. That is until you rip a decent start and pull them pretty good. Although I will say I ain't got the fitness I used to have so they eventually catch me and I finish mid pack. But it's still so much fun.
Really I don't care what I'm doing, painfully slow trail miles with complete noobies or ripping through doubles and deep berms on the track, I'm happy to just be riding still.
This season my wife decided we needed a toy hauler, so we got a toy hauler. It's refreshing and pretty dang nice to bring the fam when we go across state lines and moto for the weekend. And getting a shower at the campground before you load up is a thing of beauty.
I've ridden in Baja and Chile several times with my good friend Jimmy Sones. Those were some awesome trips. Jimmy is always banging on me to come south.....
This year I've got easily 40 plus days on my dirt cycle.so.
Riding has slowed here in the NW, so now it is time to get active in my mini home gym!
I've also started a full blown build on a 74 CZ 250.
My modern bikes are both 2016 KTM 350 (SX and XCF)
The Shop
I just bought a FX 350 so that I can do my Baja runs but still race and ride track when needed. I also still have my 250 SX, undecided on keeping it or not. Since I got the 350 the SX just collects dust.
My next bike will most likely be a DS but that new Honda 450RX looks like it might be pretty close to the perfect vet bike, still might consider one.
As for that ultimate bike, I would say a 250 or 300 smoker. If I were money no object but could only have one bike, I would go with a Husky TX300. E start and plenty of HP all in a light weight ride.
Race hare scrambles primarily but still try to mix in some MX since there is good time to be made on some of our local tracks that way. Mid pack B woods rider in our local series but probably a slow C rider on an MX track. I just have a mental block when it comes to sending it lol. No problem giving it hell between some trees though. VXCS is my primary series but I run the local GNCC's and fill in other weekends with other local series too.
My "ultimate vet bike" (for now) very budget friendly.
09 KTM 250 SX
Total Control Suspension
Acerbis 3 gal tank
Acerbis skid
G2 Ergo Handguards
Rekluse Z Start Pro
Mika Chain/Sprockets
Tusk Sharkfin
ODI Rogue Lock On's
FMF Gnarly/PowerCore2
Jetted (not JD jet kit) just bought a bunch of jets and found the sweet spot.
Still has the hit to keep it going on the MX track but can lug through the woods and sprint through the field sections. Going to keep it since I love riding a 2 stroke but I am probably going to put a FX350 or 350XCF next to it in 2018 just to try something newer.
Lots of MX with a try at Pro and Scrambles/Enduro's more in the later years. Practice MX way more than race, usually a couple times a month when life and weather don't get in the way. Definitely consider myself a Moto Head and have a pickup truck that a factory team would be proud of to prove it.
I've already got the bike I considered to be the best for a person with the budget for 1 new bike when I got it. 2015 Beta 500 RS. It has done 2 up dual sport riding, hill country adventure days, canyon carving, trail riding, Enduros, Extreme off road parks, trials, Scrambles, and of course Motocross. I bought it with 2 sets of wheels, 1 extra for dual sport. No slicks and Supermoto or Road Racing yet.. There is nothing quite like lining up at the gate with a headlight and bonking the horn when you pass someone.
Auto Sales for a living allows me plenty of time online, and I enjoy the heck out of it.
My local series does a couple GP's a year that have a moto track in them...and that is the extent of my track time. As a mid pack Vet A rider in the National Hare and hounds...I'm probably a slow B rider or fast C rider, locally, on the track.
My problem these days is finding ride time...my kids-I have 4-aren't latching on to dirt bikes like I hoped they would (they are still young, that could change), they all play competitive soccer, so most weekends I'm sitting on the side of a soccer field some place...that cramps my riding style a bit...but I wouldn't have it any other way. Riding is a hobby, and my kids are way more important.
Anyway, right now I'm riding a '15 KX450...IMS tank, Fasstco Flex Bars, Acerbis hand guards and skid plate, Rekluse EXP 3.0, FMF exhaust (with sparky), TBT revalved the suspension, High Pressure Radiator cap, TM design works chain guide, enduro engineering disk brake guards, ultra heavy duty tubes, Dunlop AT81's...and let 'er rip.
Post a reply to: How many of you are Vet-Sr racers that still ride MX along with your Off-Road, off-course...
