I'm leaving thursday to visit Yosemite for the 3rd time in 15 months... this time I'll be hiking up to the top of half dome. Wish me luck! Going to be quite the adventure...

picture is of my latest visit to the park this April on the Panorama trail... Half Dome is that big bastard over my right shoulder

That's pretty cool. Best of luck and have a great time. Its cool that you are taking advantage of the great hiking and scenery our country provides.

I'm heading up to the cascades tomorrow for a little day hike. Work has been a bear keeping me pinned down and I'm FINALLY able to sneek away for a day. It will be nice to clear my head and see some different scenery.

an old friend of mine climbed it...using just his arms!! Not sure if you ever heard his story, but it will blow your mind!!

He was the 1st paraplegic to pull off such a feat. He is a BAAAD dude! We use to play wheelchair tennis together..and party, and he knew how to do both really well! Cool

Mark Wellman, first paraplegic to climb Half Dome, Yosemite

On September 4, 1991, Mark Wellman and Mike Corbett set out to conquer Yosemite's other big wall, Half Dome. Thirteen days later they reached the top of the 2,200 foot vertical Tis-Sa-Ack route on Half Dome.

That's an amazing place, wife and I really like it. We spent three nights hiking and camping at the High Sierra camps a few years ago.
Sometime, if you haven't been up there, instead of taking the turn off to Half Dome continue up the Merced River. The river and views up there are amazing.
We stayed at Camp Curry, a few years ago. I don't think I would again.

Coolo, I know there's fires nearby now, so hopefully the smoke won't cloud the valley. Did the Dome in 80, and my wife and oldest kids did it in 05. Hydrate!

I stayed in Curry Village last time... didn't like it too much, the tents were crammed together and the guy next to me was screaming/singing loudly at night... pretty sure he had some sort of mental disorder and would have attacked me with a machete if I had said anything... anyhoo, I'll be in the Housekeeping camp or out in the wilderness camping. There is a fire just to the west of the park... I'm going with some friends from Reno and they say it's really smoky up there right now from a fire near Tahoe... hoping that doesn't complicate my breathing further for someone like me who lives at around 200ft, when I'll be hiking up to 8800 ft... and Scottie that is awesome!

Is he on that little jut out rock at Glacier Point? Blink he's definitely ballsy... this was the closest I could handle being to the edge, had to crawl on my stomach from about 6 feet back to look over the edge of Yosemite Falls where there wasn't a guard rail

@Davis, i have no clue bro, im not familiar w/ that place at all. Mark was a forest ranger there for quite a few years, the guy is truly a freak of nature.

He has a way lower injury than me, like waist down, he could lean fwd and grab his own ankles and was so strong he could hold himself up and do this trippy crab like walk, just CRAZY upper body strength.

Do any of you recall hearing his story? it made national news for many years. He now does motivational speaking appearances and has wrote a book (maybe more) Really cool guy, the stories he told about his climb was intense!!

The Sierra will always have a special place in my heart and where I call "home." Have a safe trip Davis.

Hope it doesn't also. Sounds like the fire is on the West side and moving East. Doesn't threaten the valley right now. They reported all the houses close to there, had no idea that many people lived that close. They are reporting this fire is going to go on awhile. 2% contained.

I bet Mr. Wellman is a real inspiring speaker to listen to. I can only imagine what his upper body strength must be like!! I love to hear stories like his!!! Thanks for telling us about your friend.

Man that fire is getting huge. Mother in law is starting to freak out, she is up off 108. Heading that way in the next hour or so.

I could see flames at that point. Fire is not affecting the valley at all yet. The smoke is BRUTAL in reno though.
