When it's takes help to get it up. That pic is from a 1-2 mile away or more, this stuff still leaves me in awe, at my age.
Was in this plant 2 days ago, the boom was on the ground, still being assembled. Too dark to take pics, but that's been quite a path to get to that point. About 6 feet of gravel laid down, longer than that boom stretches out from the crane, I'd guess about 50 feet wide. Then, wood beams on top, same length as the gravel. I assume this is all to keep the asphalt from collapsing under the weight of the crane and load. Those tracks are considerably higher than me, and I'm 6' 6". Two smaller cranes, I'd guess one for sure, has to raise the boom quite a ways, before the crane itself can start to pull it up on its own.

That was Bullwinkle being hauled out of Port Aransas. My dad and his company X-rayed every weld on it. It was a sight to see back then.
