I get the situation in the Everglades is pretty bad because of pythons, but no way in hell would I be doing what this trapper mike does.

Snakes and gators pretty much the worst combo ever.

When I was in Florida I saw a sign that said "be careful when approaching the wetlands, snakes and alligators are present" yet some maniacs stood right on the edge casually fishing. I kept my distance I'll tell you that..

Invasives do an unbelievable amount of damage to the ecosystem. I swam all over the Everglades as a kid. Our families friends owned a huge farm at old mm 42 when I was young and we would stay out there months at a time. There was a barn with 3 guns on tripods and boxes of ammo, targets and a big swim hole full of snakes and gators that were chased out daily. That was the kids day care. Rope swings and diving boards all over and gators everywhere but if you grew up with them than you know how they react. Of coarse I am the guy that swims home at night from the broke down boat so many times in my life in the gulf and Lake Okeechobee, the mangroves estuaries etc.. I used to strap fishing rods on my back and paddle my surfboard way back in the mangroves and wade fish way back there and would paddle back at night a lot. Good times.
Here is a tip: gators generally dont bite under water so if you are swimming and a gator swims at you swim down and at an angle from gator but be ready to keep doing it because they are attracted to surface disturbances and will keep swimming to any action on the surface. Everyone knows the run in a zig zag pattern but gators will run fast and far to water when scarred but only lunge attack about 4 to six feet from water.
Also if a grown person gets killed by a constricting snake then that person is so weak they are going to die anyway. Dont believe that b.s. but the damage they do eating the native animals is very damaging.
We are major sponsors for the study and conservation of these animals and have won awards for our efforts so I do know some basic info about them.
Oh wait Florida is all full and scary Gators, snakes, lizards and sharks love the taste of thick northern blood so I would stay away. ???

In my year living in OZ I’ve only ever seen the dangerous shit in zoos. The concept you all have of the place is so out of wack it’s not funny. We got no real dangerous animals apart from sharks. No bears no wild cats no real predictors at all. Snakes piss off when you get close, spiders are in places you would expect so you can avoid them.

Appreciate your interest, we are just a famiy of animal lovers that donate what we can and support numerous organizations that help with certain threatened species. We help finance projects involving the conservation of critical species and the great people putting in the work to help them. We also sponsor a few events each year here in Florida that raise money for conservation. We travel and study the animals and work with the conservation groups in their natural habitat logging helpful data. Our daughter studies biology and zoology. My wife's family helped start Ding darling wildlife refuge and the main building is named after her grandmother. We met in high school and picked up the food donations for Care and rehabilitation centers every week since we could drive and 30 years later still do every week. We have a private wildlife refuge as well and are privaledged to work with some amazing animals mostly endangered giant tortoises and endangered rock iguanas but we work with many species. Unfortunately people dont realize a lot of species will go extinct without captive husbandry but on the other side, people releasing invasive species causes tons of problems.
Here are some we support and hope others will too,

in 2017 I saw 3 Funnel Web's within 2 months. 1 was in my backyard, one at work, and one at my neighbours. I had never seen any before, other than at the Australian Reptile Park.

Back in about '98, there was a Red Belly behind our computer desk. You could see the office (just a big open room) from upstairs and as I was walking to another part of the house I saw something out the corner of my eye. We called a heap of people and nobody wanted to help, so my dad rigged up something to catch it and put in the bush across the road. It wasn't big but, fack!Blink

My mate was walking his dog the other week and saw a Tiger Snake.Shocked

That’s really cool y’all do that. Have you ever encountered the gentleman I posted about? After seeing his Instagram page, I was unaware how devastated the Everglades were. I think he is one of 25 contracted hired for “clean up” You have shared some of your story before about being a guide, fishing the b.a.s.s tournament and the back injury to living the good life now. Do you still have a hand in guiding?

I am familiar with him and i am friends with quite a few of those guys. Our buddy Kyle Penniston is one of the top guys and good friend and stayed at one of my rentals during the hurricane recently. His instagram is similar. Another good friend Mike Lloret is studying the freshwater American crocodiles in the glades as well, dont forget them. ? Alot of people dont realize the large population of crocs here too.
No guiding for me anymore. I retired after 22 years. Boats have sat for awhile but want to get out again soon regularly for fun but needed a break. Just doing the rental property landlord thing mostly and empty nest life which is sad. Kids grow up too fast.

So, as a long time Floridian, now living just a half mile into South Georgia, I feel qualified to weigh in.

My friend FLmxer is correct in his assessment. Notice how his experience is similar to the bro from Australia. I think TV tends to hype everything and leave us with a picture that is not reality. Of course Florida and Australia have dangerous critters, but it's not like we have an alligator encounter on every sidewalk. Usually.

I hear ya. My kids are super young, but the time is flying between home and work. Thanks for the info and will read up on the others that were mentioned. Always had a green eye for you. Guiding has always been a checklist item for me. Enjoy the time off and hope you get away from the rental properties to wet a line soon

Explain Ivan then??

I though the wildlife in Australia is amazing, the only time I encountered dangerous spiders was when clearing out a friends garage but its to be expected. I saw a massive golden orb spider in queensland which was beautiful (never thought I'd say that about a spider lol).

Orbs of all sorts here. They're just annoying as much as anything although apparently the bite hurts. Neighbour had a red-belly in his front yard a month or so back. Rather them then Browns though.

See this fucking thing they caught the other day in S-E Queensland? Fucking NOPE ROPE!

And there was this poor broad who had one in her baby daughter's nursery.

I'm not suprised they hurt, big old things ain't they. My first bit of time spent in aus I stayed with my mate in queensland who's as aussie as it gets, he wasted no time in winding up the newly arrived naive pom about snakes, spiders and drop bears. Good times ?.
