If you are into the smart TV thing... dont bother with the built in OS's... Apple TV is the way to go IMO.
I would go to the store and see them in real life though.

Walmart $650 works great. Get a soundbar with a bluetooth subwoofer. I'll go bigger when it's time to upgrade.

Another thing to consider is a soundbar or surround sound. The sound quality and volume out of the flat tv's isn't all that great. This is the one I got. It has decent sound quality and volume. Plus I like the bluetooth ability so I can blast my gangsta rap loud enough for the neighbors to hear.

Apple TV's will give you the same functionalities, but Apple TV doesn't like to play anything that wasn't downloaded from iTunes. If you've got a library of downloaded titles, then a dedicated home theater PC would be a better option. Personally I've got a WDTV Live box that I love but they've been discontinued and the refurbished units are going for more than retail ever was now. They'll play almost anything you throw at them.
Just not sure if I should get into this 4K. I can get a comparable tv for like $200. Well actually a lot nicer than my Panasonic viera and these tvs are getting so cheap. Paid $900 for mine in 2008.
I have that setup and love it. Not difficult to setup.

The projectors I've seen don't do well if there is lighting in the room. They work well in a dim room, but if you get much light from the sun or houselights, it starts to get harder to see.
Now a 65" Sony 4K Bravia a million times better so far. Didn't need or particularly look for a 4K but the deal was to good to pass
Once you move up in size initially it feels to big but a month later you're wishing it was bigger. 65" is as small a tv as I'll ever have. I even have a 65 in our bedroom
Our kitchen, we have a great little 32 inch Vizio wall mounted. Mainly to watch sports or whatever while we're cooking or have guests over. Bedroom of ours we put in a 50 inch Vizio 4k LED on a wall mount. I think the Samsung has better color, but still really good. My daughter just got a 46 inch Samsung for her room that she seems to like.
Just find something you like that is in your budget. But I'll say this, Vizio and Samsung seem to have the best ratings.
We had a 40 inch Panasonic. So this seems yuge as Donald trump would say.
The new Xbox one s started shipping last week... I have held off on a 4k blu Ray player, but pulled trigger on the latest x box... They start at 299 which is cheaper than other 4k players on the market...
Yes, 4k blu rays (which are readily available in stores like Target and best buy) look freakn awesome... Way better than 1080... However.. I have found that the upscaler in my 65" curved Samsung was already doing a great job... So while 4k blu rays look better than upscaled 1080 blu rays, it was not a huge leap... What was a huge leap was the 4k upscaling on 1080 content compared to 1080 on a 1080 TV... To boil that down, even if u don't run 2160 source content, a good 4k TV with a good upscaler will still make your old 1080 content look noticeably better...
