Big time crash. Goes to show the technology in the cars and the crash walls. 10-15 years ago you are DOA from that kind of direct it.

Interesting there were already skid marks leading to the wall right where he lost the back end. Maybe a track issue

They were from the scene beforehand where they rehearsed it.

Seb had surgery to help start the healing on his broken pelvis. He's very lucky that it wasn't worse ... very lucky.

Looking at the wall at that speed? Damn.

Not highjacking Ebs, but there were a couple incidents this weekend in motorsports. This MotoGP crash by Jack Miller was one of the weirdest I've ever seen. He was OK.

I've been watching practice and qualifying throughout the week. There's been a couple incidents in that corner, but these guys have been removing crucial bits of the rear wing little by little to get more straight line speed and this was into qualifying.

Remove down force, prepare to ride the thin line exiting a corner at 230. It happened earlier in the week also with Josef Newgarden just because of a 1 sec delay in downshifting into the corner. People talk crap about ovals and turning left, but with how far these guys are pushing it, you have to be mentally on your game every corner on every lap. There's no I'm tired so I'll just limp around the track at 1/4th the speed of the leaders. The mental focus required is insane from 1st place to last.

I've seen differing reports, but it was at least 100G's.

It's pretty tough for us on the outside looking in to grasp how on the edge those guys really are. Yeah, yeah, "It's just turning left, how hard can it be?" blah, blah, blah -Indycar racing is tough. So are the drivers. It takes guts-real guts-to go into turn one at Indy with your foot to the floor. All that and no power steering for 500 miles.

Here's what the same crash looked like 35 years ago.

Smileys was way way worse direct nose in and the cars are just now getting back to the old speeds.

I believe Luyendyk and Cheever still hold the fastest laps in the 90s in the 236-237 range.

Dixon finished with a four-lap average of 232 and change. Its the fastest time in 21 years.

Smiley’s crash was during qualifying for the 1982 500. The pole speed that year was 207. If I remember right, Smiley wasn’t even on a hot lap. He was on a warm up lap on cold tires before starting his qualifying run. His speed was estimated at around 185.

Either way, the cars are designed to disintegrate to absorb impact and Bourdais went in at an angle which is much less of an impact.

Regardless he's got a broken hip and pelvis.

Danny Ongais hit the wall at a straighter angle in 1981 and broke legs and arms and the car was totally gone from the tub and again in 1987, car about the same shape as Bourdais.

Ongais in 1981 and Smiley both made the same mistake which pointed them closer to straight in. In 1987, Ongais had learned his lesson and ended up angled it in.

In the last couple of years I started watching more IndyCar and F1 races. The 1:F1 documentary was incredible. I had no idea the true history of the sport until watching the documentary

The single biggest difference is the construction of the tubs. In 1982 the tubs were still made out of aluminum. From 1983 on they were made out of carbon fiber composite. A night and day difference in an impact.
