Has180 degrees only on one side.
Brass.
Has a pointer with N.
You can trun the pointer on its axis.

A clinometer. A pretty old one at that.

(My guess...)

My guess as well. Don't think it's nautical since its only pos/neg 90 degrees. Hopefully somebody knows.

Any markings on it? Company name? Where it was made? Anything?

Maybe it came from an old airplane? Only thing I would know of that you would need a clinometer and compass combo.

Is this something you bought or randomly found somewhere? If you found it, where did you find it? In a box with similar old items? That could maybe give you a clue as to what it could be.

It's old. I know that much but how old is it is the question.

Going to revise my guess a little. Combo clinometer and compass. Compass being secondary function.

(Very interesting, regardless...)

The "N" is interesting, but I can't see it being any kind of compass the way it's configured. The thing being threaded and all.

The shaft that the N pointer is on allows it to change the axis then you pull the shaft out to lock its position.
Its been hanging on our office wall all my adult (57) life it was my Dads.
Dad was in the Navy as a pby and tbm avenger mechanic.
The military would have all kinds of markings on it if it was from that.
I just enjoy looking at it and all the other mautical lamps and coumpas he had.
Thanks everyone

I believe it to be a maritime captains cabin map reading tool from what I have seen online.
Makes sense as Dad loved old boat stuff.

Not necessarily....about the military and it having all kinds of markIngs. There’s a lot of stuff that isn’t really marked. And how old you think that piece is? Ww2 era inventory wasn’t as tightly tracked as it is now. I mean hell some units let guys take home their m1s after the war.

Maybe a gimbled maritime compass that goes inside a binnacle. Really cool.

I wonder if since the pointer is on a gimble you can calc your latitude also?
As it would point through the earth at a specific angle
relative to where you're at?
Or it was your dad's when he was a kid walking 8 miles in the snow up hill
both ways to school barefoot (like my dad)?
