I agree with your what a African American is , but I disagree with your other responses. African slaves culture was taken from them and not allowed by the slave owners. We no longer know our original languages and such. African slaved in America was often killed for practicing thier original culture. So then White Americans gave us all the names we are called today in order to describe our race. From Niggers, to Negros to Blacks to African Americans. So when we say black it is our Culture here in America.

Also, Brosho- which country in Africa does your family hail from? My dad's family is from Germany. My great great granddad came here in 1898 and settled in ND on a dusty dirt farm. He worked is ass off for the land owner and gradually bought 450 acres from him for his homestead. He had a hard time at first with the language, but got better. He never allowed German to be spoken in the house because he wanted my great granddad and great uncles/aunts to be more American than he and my great great grandma were.

He came voluntarily because he didn't like where Europe was going in the early part of last century (smart man). There is an obvious difference between coming here voluntarily and being kidnapped and sold into slavery, but I think that vanillaice's contention that our respective families are better off here than they would have been if they had been living in Europe or Africa (at least the parts of Africa most slaves came from) is something that can be discussed.

I'm not advocating slavery. This is the melting pot. I'm saying that in 200 years Mexican Americans might look back on this time period when they had to endure a cross country journey to work for less than minimum wage with some rose colored glasses. The history books might say that white America owes them since they all worked for cheap because they were willing to work hard to get away from a shitty third world country.

No I actually pretty much said the opposite of that. We owe the Jewish people because we let the holocaust happen....but you don't here them complaining about that or bringing it up every chance that they get. Instead they got to work.
