My search for a nice usable anvil has led me to a few old vises that I just couldn't pass up. I have a friend who hits a lot of estate sales and garage sales and while no anvil has turned up, he too has picked me up a couple vises. Nothing big yet but this cool little Parker 63 1/2 got dropped on my desk last week. Cool looking 1950's art deco design I think it will clean up nicely.

Found this US made Craftsman at a neighbors house, free for the taking. Looked as bad as the Parker, but under the crud it looked in excellent condition. Degreased, glass bead blasted and a fresh coat of epoxy primer and red urethane had it looking pretty good again. Light coat of oil on the bare metal pieces to keep from rusting.

Here is another, a Dunlap (similar to photo) he dropped off along with a small pipe vise of unknown brand. Not enough of the name left to identify. Maybe someone here knows. I blasted and painted the pipe vise for him and kept the Dunlap.

I did put a light coat of clear over the bare metal jaws, bolts and handle as there was no chrome or zinc left on any of it to help slow down future corrosion out in his shop.

And my estate sale find, all for $25.00. 1958 120mm tank round ammo crate, feeler gauges, 1/4 in Proto ratchet, safety wire pliers, Snap On 3/8 flex shaft hand driver, 6 in Japanese adjustable wrench, Vessel Impact screwdriver set, machinists numbering and lettering stamp sets and two vises. One is a US made Craftsman hobby vise and the other a small US made Wilton bench vise.

Keeping on the lookout for some big ones at bargain prices, never know what will turn up. Any of you have any vise or shop tool finds you've stumbled across?

Nice collection and even nicer refurbish. I have a lot of cool stuff because both my grandpas had service stations in the 50's to 80's and one of them was a heavy equipment mechanic as well. But as far as anvils go, we just cut off about a 10 inch piece of railroad track and used the rail road track clips to fasten it to a waste high stump from a tree we cut down beside the building. We have pounded on that thing for years and it never fails. We also have a piece of track that is not fastened and we have used it often over the years. Turn it on its side and you can knock barrings out ect. It works great for things you don't mind hammering on.

My vise purchase is the biggest waste of $80. Went to the local Northern Tool store and bought an $80 vice. The jaws don't line up when you close them. I did mount it on a hitch receiver to plug into my welding table when I need to use it though. I do like that setup.

I haven't had much of a need for a vice with all of my other clamps and welding equipment, but it would be nice to have a good Wilton.

I recently purchased my first small vise which is the Wilton 69999. Pretty cool vise for home use. Both the head and body rotate.

That's the best possibility I could dream up but I can't seem to find any good info or photos of a decal. The castings don't have any names or model numbers and the base looks different than any I've found pics of on the internet.

I bought a similar styled Yost for those same features. Was a bit bummed that they didn't have an American made one. Felt dirty buying a Chinese tool. Found the best price with free shipping on Amazon. Still need to build a work bench though...

I just picked up a dual head 360 degree rotate vice that I plan on refurbishing with poly vice heads to hold my two forks.

My first Vise

I was about 15 and had a part time job after school at an autobody shop. Yep Newmann – a body shop.I spent 2 years there before getting a job at a motorcycle shop.

I was the painters toby …… the painter sold me a BSA C15. He delivered and I parked it in the garage. Ha! it leaked some oil - my stepdad was not going to have any of that in his garage. There was an old shed that he helped me get ready for a shop…..damn my shop!

The first thing I need is a bench and a vise…….yes there is an old beat up vise waiting to be mounted.

So I scrounge some lumber (it happens to be a bit wet) Up goes the bench and now a top…wooo whooo.

I bolt down the vise and grab a hold of the handle to test tighten something….frk I get a damn electrical shock!! What the Fck!!

So I think about it a bit…just what happened? Only thing I can think of is that a grazed a wire with a nail when building the bench. How am I going find that SOB.

Ha! I got some wire, loosened up one of the bolts wrapped some wire around it, ran the rest out side and clamped that end to a rod that I drove into the ground!! Problem solved.

To this day (50 years later) the bench, vise and wire is still there in that old shop. Of course the wood dried out and the problem solved itself.

Had a friend from central Texas pass by the shop the other day and commented on one of the vises I had just gotten. He also commented on an old Honda EU300 (?) Generator I had on a cart. Being that he has all things Honda including several of the old mini generators I promptly loaded it in his truck. One more project out of my life! But being the enabler that he is, the mailman just dropped me off a box.

Back to the usable anvil , have you looked for a small length of old rail road track? Not sure if you plan to use it for hot forging or not but I've heard of guys using railroad tracks when starting out.

No, not mine of course. But I can get it. You see the prices.
I bet those big ones weight like 100 pounds and up. You`re looking at 500 bucks freight at least.
