Honest question, why was metal so big back then? It's amazing.

I don't like anything by Metallica after Master of Puppets.

I like Metallica. But I saw them at Alpine Valley in the late 80 I think it was ? Monsters of rock . The Scorpions were the closing act and they were great. Anyway I was very disappointed in Metallica. They were loud and distorted to the point of not being able to really hear what was being played at times. Only time I've seen them live and that's a long time ago. I've got to think that's changed.

You need to watch the video. It gets intense - 1.6M people rocking out! Crazy!

I think Metallica just had the perfect album at just the right time. The eighties was more fun rock until Nirvana and Metallica came on the scene in late 80s (88-89?). From that point on, rock was a little harder and better.

It was finally being accepted as main stream music. Prior to that time period the metal scene was very underground. Many people to this day wish it still was. But true metal was finally out in the open and Metallica was leading the way for the most part.

Metallica sold out, went mainstream to get airplay and basically turned in to another hair band. Sorry, I was an underground Metal Head at that time.

C'mon James they just let Bob Rock groom them too much. Their "fall from grace" so to speak was the S&M album, which I like.... ok half of it.

I've seen them live a handful of times over the past few years, and their live sound is effing amazing. I would even argue they sound better now than they did in 2000 on the Summer Sanitarium tour.

Plus, all of those guys are pushing 60 and the fact they can still play all of their fast, technical stuff without screwing up is a feat all in itself.

Mav, I'll answer that just based on what it seemed like to me at the time. By 90-91, most "Rock" bands on MTV had become very much bubble gum rock type shit. The more hairspray, lip gloss, eyeliner, etc... they wore, the better it seemed to them. However, most groups started to sound very much alike, and solid acts like Metallica stood out. They wore denim, looked like they could kick your ass, and generally didn't give 2 shits about any of the current Rock vibe. They were raw, real, did things their way, which was a nice change from the "hair" era that was everywhere. My first day of college was the day The Black album was released, but I was already a fan going back to "And Justice for All". Metal was really becoming mainstream towards the late 80's, folks were tired of rock bands dressed in drag......

I saw them at Brown Field in San Diego during The Shit Hits the Sheds tour in '94. Badass concert. They played for a solid 2 hours, and about halfway through, Lars, Hetfield and Newsted took a break, and left Kirk onstage by himself. That dude tore the joint up for probably 20 minutes before the rest of the band came back and they finished the show.
