Picked this little beauty up today. It's going to be a project for my son and I.

There's no better car to learn how to spin wrenches on than a Bug. Good luck to you and your son.
Looks like fun. I want one of those eventually for the desert.
When I was a kid I had a neighbor that had turbo bugs that ran crazy fast down the quarter mile

I feel confident the AC is not working, the auto transmission slips, and the brakes need to be bleed (at least the rear).
Man, that rear trunk is tiny.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
I used to be able to drop an engine in 20 minutes, tear it down, rebuild it in 2.5 hours and be driving again 45 minutes after that. Vdub flats are super easy to work on. If thats a 1600cc, the 1835cc kit makes the beetle a monster, twin kehins or twin delortos if you can find them, super fun car that can handle its own. It just wont stop very well hahaha
There's some pretty cool ones out there. Quite a few years back, a buddy of mine rolled a 70's Toyota 4 wheeler. The body was toast but the rest of it was OK. He dug a 50's beetle body out of a junkyard and grafted it to the Toyota. Pretty trick looking when it was done. He also built pipe bumpers for it and used them for air reservoirs in the case of flats. I questioned his sanity a little over that one. Luckily he never blew one up.
Nice. You can make them scoot pretty good too! Had a good friend of the shop here whose brother used to drag race them. Had another customer build up a trick one and had us paint it. Jesse James ended up buying it.

Nice!! Needs a set of Fuch's alloys and a stance (.5" / 1"). PIERSIDE PARTS (Huntington Beach, CA) is the "Newmann" of the beetle world----owner is very cool.
I had a buddy in high school who dumped a 2100cc in his Beetle. Once he figured out the right weight for the clutch cable (snapped 3 cables trying), the thing was an absolute monster. Getting the front end off the ground was a piece of cake.
That's awesome. I had a 71 in high school that I dumped about 15 grand into. It had a billet case 1641 with dual Weber 40's and a transaxle engineering tranny that ran low 13's all day long... . I paid for the car and mod's by taking mustang owners money street racing in the 90's around the SFV.
I miss that car.
Wel, I got to do a little work on the bug last night.
did a compression test, checked out good. The fuel system is need of some serious atention. Rusty gas tank, shot fuel pump and the carb needs rebuilt.
Looking for a low cost method to remove\ stop the rust in the tank. Any suggestions would help...

Evaporust is some amazing stuff for removing rust.
POR-15 make a all in one gas tank repair kit that is really good too. Done many motorcycle tanks with it and one for a car.
Have used this on many bikes and a truck gas tank. Excellent, reasonably priced, products.

In between Gibby punting me over the berm, I do try to post usable info.
Everyone should have some Evaporust on the shelf.

Were they ever in the front?
OP,
Cool bug. Growing up, we always had one. We even had a baja version once!
