Hey gang-

I know we have almost as many experts here, (Newmann), as we do those who think they are, so I'll give this a shot.

My son is looking at buying a used truck, and he stumbled across a 2016 F150XLT with the 5.0 v8 and 6 speed auto- about 45K miles. It has an R title and we're looking into why.

The R title may not be a deal breaker depending on what the history turns out to be. We've bought R title used cars before and had great results.

My main concern is getting some feedback on this particular model and drivetrain. I don't know much about them. I'm doing my own research, and this is a part of it.

Any "helpful" advice?

Link to truck listing
I’m no expert, but I have a 13 I bought new with the same engine and transmission and it has 160,000 miles on it and it still looks and drives like new.

Yes, carfax will have the history on this specific vehicle. My son is getting that from the dealer. As stated, I'm interested in what people have experienced about this platform in general.

Gworm- thanks for sharing your experience.

I don’t think you can go wrong with a 5.0 V8 F150. Had a 2013 - those had issues with the coolant reservoir leaking (common) - also had an AC issue but other than that it was solid.

Personally owned a 2016 F-150. Best half ton trucks, hands down. The 5.0 would be my second choice behind the 3.5. 100K miles of oil changes and tires, problem free. Routinely pulled over “max” loads behind it, to the tune of 14.5K.

I sold my 2011 5.0 (first year for the 5.0) last year with 180k miles.
Zero issues from the motor from 0 miles until 180k.
Electrical issue around 170k miles on the tranny that was a ~$300 repair.

Overall, truck required minimal maintenance for the entire time i owned it (i bought it new in 2011).

Only got rid of it is i don't like having a daily driver with high(er) mileage and my commute was about to increase.

Ahh, my language. My trucks are my second hobby.

I currently own a 2015 platinum f150. I searched out this specific truck. I wanted a 5.0 because I planned on keeping it for a long time, and quite frankly, turbos and long term scared me from the 3.5. I bought it with 60k on it in the end of 2018. It now has 102k. Only thing I've done is new motorcraft plugs just for maintenance (super easy), Bilstein 5100 rear shocks, and rear pads.

Back up a little....

To me, gearing became a very big factor for me. You can find the gearing on the door jamb sticker. Look under axle, then Google the axle code, or just find the original window sticker. My dad had a 13 5.0 with 3.31s. after driving that truck, I thought I'd never buy another f150 (first half ton since an 04 5.4 I had). Dogshit slow and sluggish. Then I started researching and found that there were two other gear options (3.55 and 3.73). I found an xlt with a 5.0 3.73 and went and test drove it. Wow, entirely different than my dad's truck. That's when my search started and I sold my camper so didn't need my 3/4 ton. I knew I still wanted to tow a decent camper if needed, or dump trailer with mulch, or the sled trailer in the winter. My 5.0 with 3.73 5.5' bed platinum is like a mustang in a truck body. The mpg difference is too negligible for me to care, 1.5-2. It rips, and it's rated to tow 10,900. The 3.55 is rated around 8800 and the 3.31 is something like 7400.. I've pulled a 31' bumper pull about 20 miles and had no problem. I've also pulled roughly 11k in mulch in a dump and the gearing and motor was just fine. Sure she worked, but I expected that as these things make HP hlat higher rpms. Only thing I'd do to comfortably pull would be airbags or load right set up.

My dad now owns an 18 5.0 6.5' bed with 3.55s and the 10 speed.. After driving that, I definitely like my 6 speed. My perfect truck, that im actively looking for is a 17 5.0 3.73 platinum or king ranch (yes my wife and I both like stupid bells and whistles) with a 6.5' bed and towing mirrors.. I'll likely have an f150 until I buy a 5er toy hauler. Even then I'll probably stay gas as in very intrigued by the new 7.3. diesels are fun and have power for days, but they cost alot more all the way around. If I pulled heavy multiple times a week, maybe back to no spark plugs.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. I can't help you with the R title stuff as I've always been too scared to go that route to save a few bucks. If you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out and shoot me a text. 330 eight oh six oo82..

Cannot speak on the 2016, but can speak on F-series in general. There's a reason they've been number 1 for decades.... Take care of it, it will take great care of you. Can't go wrong with an F150.

Get the “AutoCheck” also. It’s by Experian, the credit report people. I’ve seen CarFax say a car was fine, AutoCheck said it had been in a major collision and was “salvage”.

Beware of that “branded” title. Hard to insure and nearly impossible to finance. “Rebuilt” from “salvage”. Say that to yourself two or three times before you let your sign buy it.

Thanks guys. Somebody bought the R title truck before he finished his research, but he's still looking. The power train advice was really good, so muchachos garcias Meister.

I can explain more later, but my dad’s 2012 with the 3.5 was an absolute nightmare. Constantly in the shop under warranty and he ultimately dumped it for a new Silverado. Loved the truck, but all kinds of issues relating to throttle response and kicking/bucking under load, which Ford repeatedly insisted just needed “updated programming.”

Ya, the next one he's looking at has the smaller displacement twin turbo with nearly 70K miles. I'm steering him in the direct opposite direction of that one! One turbo is bad enough, but two? Especially when they get old and cranky.

I've got a 2016 with the 5.0 and about 45k miles and so far the truck has been great zero issues.

Evidently, you’ve never seen the “Cam Chain for Days” inside the Coyote 5.0 platform!

For you old guys who would remember a SOHC 427, yeah, that bad.

You're right, I haven't. Are you saying the cam drive design is problematic? What is the history/evidence?

Thanks!

We have a 2016 F150 XLT with the 5.0 and so far we have loved it. Only regret was getting a short bed, so have to leave tailgate down or use Moto Gate when hauling more than just my bike. Just hit 48k and so far, so good. Plenty of power and will tow things its probably not supposed to pretty comfortably... Smile Gas mileage is not great, but ours has a 6" lift with 35's and we still manage 13 in town and about 18 on the highway.

Being a Ford tech 5.0's before 2018 are good engine! I've seen water pump failures with higher mileage and T connector that goes to the t-stat housing is common for leaking, but overall 5.0 is a reliable engine.

Well shit...……….. Praise the truck yesterday, then wife leaves for work this morning and check engine light came on. Quick trip by the dealer to run the code and they said its an issue with intake manifold. According to her, when the tech asked her if she had the 5.0 and she said "yes", he said could be the manifold itself. Dropping it off Sunday so they can have it for a few days... Could be nothing, but after posting about it yesterday - figured i would post this as well.

I broke an oil pump gear, but I was also spinning it to 8k on a 200 shot! 😂

I've seen a few Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) fail but not many.

I'll be pulling the trigger on a new F150 in the near future . I can't tell you how many guys i work with that drive the F150 so i must have questioned 30 of them to pick their brains about what options i wanted and what they wish they had gotten. Locking rear differential ,36 gallon tank and then the towing package is all must haves for me . The wife wants running boards so no big deal there and then she would like but doesn't need the navigation. I plan to pull a small camper probably next year but it won't be over 5000 pounds .

Tellin ya, put gearing on your must have list. 3.55 or 3.73. preferably 3.73. No chance I'd own one with 3.31s though. Sync 3 would be another must have. Something I fell in love with that I thought I'd hate is adaptive cruise control. No brake tapping if traffic slows is so nice..

I have the 3.31s in my 14 Eco F150. It's doable with the low end torque, but if I had to do it over I would do 3.55 or 3.73. But its not enough for me to want to get rid of my paid for truck lol.

Also, one thing I really wish I had is the bed step for loading bikes.

They have a 10 speed now which will help tremendously over the 6 speed.

Honestly, I have a 2019 f150 with the 5.0 V8, 3.31 gears, and the 10 speed, and I think it’s does well. The 10 speed helps a lot with the low end power and 3.31 gears do very well on top. I’m coming from a ‘15 ram with 5.7 hemi and I would say the f150 is overall faster. Especially in sport mode running E85.

Ive recently towed with my f150 and while it wasn’t as effortless as would have liked, it still towed a 24’ boat up and down hills with zero issues. Maybe the 3.73 gears would do better especially with my 33” tires but in tow/haul mode the truck performed strong.

Because of this thread and the comments made, I’ve since looked into converting both diff’s to 3.73 (4X4), and the $1900 price (parts and labor) is too high to for me at the moment. Maybe once the truck outta warranty I’ll reconsider?
