Here's a video of the accident. You don't actually see it go down but you see him showing off just before he obviously lost control of it and crashed. He kept getting close to the water, up again, down close to the water, etc.
Plane he was piloting was an Icon A5.
Warning: Heavy use of foul language.

There are old pilots and bold pilots but very few old bold pilots.

As for what to do in that situation that's hard to tell. Everyone reacts differently. The guy filming was obviously in shock and didn't know what to do with himself, others might have immediately jumped in the water to look for him.
Looking at the plane after the crash I say he knocked himself out cold on the glass and drowned.
Personally I don't think there was anything wrong with the plane. My guess is that he was simply having fun just like most of us do on a dirt bike and he unfortunately lost control of the airplane and crashed. Difference being his accident was at a much higher speed than us dirt bikers and over water.
Like I previously mentioned, he probably got knocked out cold when the plane hit the water and his lungs filled up with water and drowned. It's sad but if that's what happened at least he was out cold. I couldn't imagine drowning while still being conscious and trapped. Horrible way to go.

Hopefully that guy will be disciplined properly and offer an apology.
I remember several months ago there was a story I believe took place in Florida where three teens saw a guy drowning and instead of helping him or calling for help they just stood there watching the guy struggle for his life, laughing at him and telling him he was going to die. The guy in the water lost his life and I believe the teens were eventually charged for something.
I'll admit that I don't know much of anything about planes but being in a plane cockpit is it even possible to open one up from the outside? I have a feeling it can only be open from the inside for safety reasons.
Say he was knocked out on impact and the cockpit filled up with water there's not much anyone could of done to help him out. That's assuming it can only be opened from the inside.
The A5 is an amphibious plane that can take off from the water and be towed with its wings folded.
In April, another pilot made a hard water landing with his A5 off Key Largo, telling investigators that the plane came down faster than he'd expected.
I don't know but if I had just seen a plane crash my first reaction would of been to race to the scene of the accident and see what's up. Not take my cell phone out and film the crash site. Film the guy in the plane having fun absolutely but the crash site? WTF is up with that. I'm sure a lot of people would have the same reaction. Some on the other hand are just too busy trying to get their Instagram following up.

You are sure right though, theres always a chance and it was never attempted.
It's not being boastful or "manning-up"; it's simply instinctive. No way that dude with the camera rides!
